Yoshitsune Minamoto is said to have committed suicide at Koromo River in Hiraizumi, Oshu. Chased by Minamoto no Yoritomo, he fled to Umayaishi and prayed to the statue of Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) in front of the raging sea.
The statue of Kannon, to which Yoshitsune prayed, is enshrined here. Five hundred years after Yoshitsune crossed the straits, Enku found the statue of Kannon, Yoshitsune's guardian deity, shining on a rock, and carved a Buddhist statue out of driftwood, placed it inside, and built a small hall to worship it. The temple is called "Ryomazan Yoshitsuneji Temple.
From the temple, you can look down on the verdant expanse of the Tsugaru Straits.
