What is Hakuba village and Otari village like?

Hakuba Village is known as one of the most popular tourist areas in Japan, with its magnificent and beautiful scenery of the Northern Alps, abundant nature, and outdoor experiences such as mountain climbing and skiing.
Since 1998, Hakuba Village has become internationally known and the number of foreign visitors to the village has increased rapidly due to the active acceptance of local residents. The number of foreign visitors to Hakuba Village has increased dramatically since 1998. Even today, the village has a rich international flavor that attracts many foreigners, especially during the ski season.

Kotani Village is a small village located in the northwestern corner of Nagano Prefecture, surrounded by mountains and deep enough in snow to be designated as a special heavy snowfall area.
In addition to winter sports, various activities such as paragliding can be enjoyed during the green season as well.

The village is named after Karamatsu-dake (Mt. Karamatsu) in the Hakuba mountain range, from which ridges extend in all directions. <八方尾根>
The 1.5-hour trekking course to Happoike is dotted with spectacular spots overlooking 11 of Japan's 100 most famous mountains, and on clear days, from the first cairn (*), Mt.
Fuji from the first cairn (*) on clear days. The area from Kurorishidaira to the top is designated as Chubu-Sangaku National Park as well as a Nagano Prefecture Natural Monument. In addition to rare alpine plants, the area is home to a large number of plants and animals, including the Japanese serow and grouse, which are designated as special natural treasures. The overwhelming mountain scenery, which changes with the seasons, is a must-see.

Hakuba Goryu area

Riding the Telecabin, an 8-seat gondola from Toomi Station at the foot of the mountain, you will feel as if you are taking a walk in the air among the autumn leaves. Once you get off at the Alpsdaira Station at the top of the mountain, you will finally reach the entrance to < Hakuba Goryu Alpine Botanical Garden>. The Alps View Lift, built on the slope of the mountain, will take you to the top of the botanical garden in about 10 minutes. A short climb after getting off the lift will take you to Jizo Cairn, from which you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Nagano mountains, including the Northern Alps and Mt. Asama. If you go a little further, you can enjoy the Alps Plain Nature Trail, which takes about 30 minutes to walk around in the bright red autumn leaves, or the Koetomiyama trekking trail, which takes about 90 minutes each way.

< Tsugaike Nature Park> Koetomi is one of the highest marshlands in Japan, located at an altitude of 1,900 meters. In October, when the first snow covers the summit of the mountain, visitors can enjoy the three-tiered colored leaves: white of snow, red of colored leaves, and green of colored leaves.
It takes about 3.5 to 4 hours to walk around the park, but if you are short on time or are not confident about your stamina, there are also the Mizubasho Marsh Course and the Watasuge Marsh Course, which take about 1 to 1.5 hours, allowing you to fully enjoy the nature of the highlands.
