Harako-meshi (harako rice) is one of Miyagi Prefecture's autumn delicacies! Harako-meshi is a well-known local dish of Miyagi Prefecture using salmon, and the seasoning of harako-meshi varies from household to household, as does the taste of harako-meshi available at restaurants. In this issue, we will introduce restaurants serving harako-meshi near Sendai Station, a stop on the Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train line.

What is Harako-meshi, a taste of autumn in Miyagi?

Harako-meshi is one of Miyagi's autumn delicacies. Harako-meshi is rice cooked with salmon meat and salmon roe (salmon roe) in a broth made of soy sauce, mirin (sweet sake), and other seasonings. In Miyagi Prefecture, "harako-meshi" signs can be seen everywhere in autumn, and the staff of JR East Travel Service Center Sendai also feel the autumn season when they see the words "harako-meshi.

Harako-meshi is said to have originated in Watari-cho, Miyagi Prefecture, near the mouth of the Abukuma River. Harako-meshi is so famous that October 8 has been designated as "Harako-meshi Day," a day to commemorate the birth of this local dish, which can be enjoyed right after getting off at Sendai Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line. This time, we would like to introduce "Harako-meshi" recommended by JR East Travel Service Center Sendai, which you can eat right after getting off at Sendai Station of Tohoku Shinkansen.

Miyagi Salmon Harako-meshi & Beef tongue at Toshiku's Japanese Restaurant Matsushima

Toshiiku is famous in Sendai for its "beef tongue," but did you know that you can also eat Japanese food at Toshiiku? TRIKYU's Japanese Restaurant Matsushima is located on the first basement floor of S-PAL Sendai, directly connected to Sendai Station. The restaurant mainly serves fresh seafood caught in the seas around Miyagi, and "Harako-meshi" (harako rice) is available here in autumn.

We recommend the "Miyagi salmon raw and seared two kinds of Harako-meshi Gozen". This is perfect for those who want to eat harako-meshi (harako rice) ・・・・ but also want to try Sendai's famous beef tongue. This luxurious harako-meshi comes with two kinds of high-quality, fresh Miyagi brand salmon, one raw and the other seared, as well as "Oita-ikura" (salmon roe). The set meal also comes with maitake mushroom tempura, grilled swordfish, and salmon sake lees soup, making it a very popular set meal for a limited time only, allowing you to fully enjoy the flavors of autumn. The restaurant is directly connected to Sendai Station, making it a great place to stop by before boarding the Shinkansen.

This time, we would like to introduce the exquisite "Harakomeshi" at Hamaya, located on the first basement floor of Espar Sendai, directly connected to Sendai Station! Each piece of salmon roe used is carefully loosened and marinated in Hamaya's original marinade overnight. This time-consuming process is the secret of its deliciousness. The crispy texture of the salmon roe, the fatty salmon, and the aroma of the rice cooked in the condensed broth will whet your appetite. The autumn delicacies of Miyagi Prefecture will fill your mouth with delight as you enjoy the salmon fillet, the salmon roe, and the rice. The dish is served in a steamer basket, so it stays hot until the very end.

Harako-meshi using Onagawa brand salmon "Gin-O" at Salmon Cafe & Bar Gin Knot

Did you know that Miyagi Prefecture is the number one silver salmon farm in Japan? Among them, "Gin-Oh," a brand of farmed salmon produced in Onagawa, Miyagi Prefecture, has become a topic of conversation because of its delicious fatty taste without any odor. All of the salmon served at Salmon Cafe & Bar Gin Knot uses Gin-O, and this time we would like to introduce a slightly different arrangement called Harako Meshi (Harako Rice).

Harako-meshi is usually served with cooked salmon, but at Salmon Cafe & Bar Ginmotsubi, you can enjoy a luxurious "Nama Harako-meshi" made with fresh salmon. It is a dish that can be enjoyed only because it looks so vivid and fresh. The pieces and stringy parts from the process of cooking Gin-O are stewed in soy sauce and other seasonings, and the rice cooked in the broth is filled with Gin-O sashimi and ikura (salmon roe). The base of the rice is no longer visible! You can also get "Western-style harako-meshi," a pilaf-like dish with a gentle buttery flavor. The butter and salmon are a perfect match, and when you take a bite, you will be amazed at how fluffy the salmon is. The salmon is lightly cooked to bring out the best of the Gin-Ou, so the aroma and moistness of the salmon is irresistible. Please try the "Western-style Harako-meshi" that you cannot find anywhere else!
