What are Kokeshi Doll Lanterns?

After the Obon season, the cooler, autumn-like season is gradually approaching in the Tohoku region. In this issue, we would like to introduce a craft called kokeshi lanterns, which was born in Kuroishi City, Aomori Prefecture. Kokeshi lanterns are made in the shape of the Tsugaru Kokeshi doll, a traditional craft of Tsugaru, and are divided into three or four sizes, the largest of which is as tall as a person! There is a wide range of designs, from standard ones to those with a slightly modified modern look.

The process of making kokeshi lanterns using traditional techniques

Kokeshi lanterns are made using the techniques of Aomori Prefecture's representative festivals, Neputa and Chochin. The framework is made by assembling a piece of wood in the shape of a kokeshi doll and wrapping wire around it in a linear pattern. Next, washi paper is applied and the face and design are drawn on to complete the frame. The designs and patterns on the body generally use kokeshi designs and traditional colors. Since all the drawings are hand-drawn, each kokeshi lantern is unique.
Making kokeshi lanterns

Craftsmen working hard to make the lanterns.

The kokeshi lanterns are made by a craftsman named Yuichi Mori. He basically handles the entire process by himself, from measuring to drafting and painting! There is a lot of detailed work involved, and the painting process alone takes about three days. Therefore, it takes at least 10 days to make one large lantern.

Creating a New Attraction in Kuroishi City

Kokeshi lanterns are placed at the entrances of many tourist facilities, lodging facilities, and restaurants in Kuroishi City to welcome visitors. At night, the gentle light brings color and comfort to the dark landscape. Kokeshi lanterns are ordered from all over Japan. They also produce table-top type and various miscellaneous goods with kokeshi motifs upon request, so please inquire if you would like to purchase them!
