The quarrying of the stone began around 1887 (Meiji 20), and it was used for building materials and brazier, etc. However, after the end of the war, when cement became widely used for building materials, the demand for the stone material decreased drastically, and the active quarry in Miyadani was closed down.

The Miyatani Quarry is privately owned and normally inaccessible, but visitors can make a reservation in advance for a guided tour. The walk to the quarry is through a small tunnel. Since it is an abandoned mine, there is no light and you can only rely on your flashlight. It is a bit of an adventure.

At the end of the tunnel, you will find a space that looks like a mysterious ancient ruin. The quarry is an extraordinary experience. Please visit the quarry.
