The Kurobe Dam, one of the largest dams in Japan, was built in the midst of Kurobe's magnificent nature and was called the "Great Project of the Century" due to its large scale and unimaginably difficult construction. Commonly called "Kuroyon," it is also famous for being the tallest dam in Japan at 186 meters. The total construction cost was 51.3 billion yen, and it took 7 years and 10 million people to build it. It is a scenic spot along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, and the efforts of the people at that time and the hardships they endured in its construction are still remembered.

One of the most popular attractions of the Kurobe Dam is the dynamic sightseeing water discharge!

What is Kurobe Dam's sightseeing water release?

The Kurobe Dam releases water at a fixed time each year to maintain the scenery of the Kurobe Gorge. The water release is usually held from late June to mid-October, and this year's period is from June 26 to October 15! The water spray, which sprays more than 10 tons of water per second from the highest point in Japan, is very powerful. The observation deck, outer staircase, and new observation plaza are great viewing points. The Rainbow Terrace in particular is a great place to see the water spray up close, and depending on the direction of the wind, it can reach you in a fine mist. On a clear day, you may be able to see a beautiful rainbow over the water discharge.

If you visit Kurobe Dam, you can also take a cruise on Lake Kurobe aboard "Garbe," the highest sightseeing boat operating at the highest point in Japan. Taking 30 minutes to circle around Kurobe Lake, the highest elevation of which is 1,448 meters, the Garbe makes it easy to enjoy the grandeur of Kurobe's nature on the cool emerald green lake while looking up at the Northern Alps looming in front of you, and you can see not only the surrounding mountains but also the Kurobe Dam from the dam lake.

If you get hungry, take a break while eating the famous "Kurobe Dam Curry. The roux made with spinach, which is inspired by the dam lake, is a bit dry, but it looks interesting and is a perfect memento of your trip. At the Kurobe Dam Rest House, where you can eat, you can also enjoy original sweets such as "Fracture Belt Chocolate Mousse" and "Hasaider Float" in addition to dam curry.

It has been very hot recently, but to our surprise, there is still snow in Murodo on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route! Today, June 29, we checked the temperatures, and it is about 15 degrees Celsius in Murodo and about 21 degrees Celsius in Kurobe Dam, which is much more comfortable than the temperature down there. Why don't you spend this summer on top of the mountain where the air is cool and tasty while enjoying the spectacular view?
