A traditional folk performing art that has been handed down since the early Edo period, the Nenbutsu Odori (prayer dance) is performed to offer offerings to the spirits of deceased relatives.
The dance was temporarily suspended in 1914, but was revived in 1952 and has been performed to this day.
During the Bon Festival in April and August every year, girls between the ages of 6 and 12 wear kimono and hanagasa hats and dance with fans and twilled bamboo in their hands, going around the Tofukuji Temple grounds and houses of the new Bon Festival to dedicate the dance.
In 1975, it was designated an important intangible cultural property by the prefecture, and in 1978 it was designated a national selective intangible folk cultural property.
