Nihon-dera Temple has a long history as a temple where learned priests gathered from all over Japan
The "Shotozan" plaque above the temple gate was handwritten by Hon'ami Koetsu, and is one of Japan's three most famous paintings, and is a designated cultural property of Tako Town. It is also home to a folding screen associated with Mitsukuni Tokugawa of the Mito Domain.
In the center of the water fountain is a "Substitute Kannon," which is said to be able to "take the place of" you if you scrub the bad parts of your body with a scrubbing brush.

Nihon-dera Temple is also a hydrangea temple.
There are approximately 8,000 hydrangeas planted in the temple grounds! There is a large "Hydrangea Garden" and a "Hydrangea Walkway" separate from the approach to the temple, where visitors can enjoy colorful hydrangeas. The best time to view them is usually from mid to late June, when various types of hydrangeas such as gaku hydrangea and hon hydrangea are in full bloom in red, purple, blue, white, light red, etc.
