Kurikoma Kogen Station is located on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line, but the name of the mountain is Mount Kurikoma. Kurikoma straddles Miyagi, Akita, and Iwate prefectures, and is nicknamed the "Queen of the Ou Mountains. The mountain's name comes from the snowy shape of a horse that appears on the western side of the summit in early summer.

The mountain is also known as one of the 100 most beautiful mountains in Japan for its flowers, 150 species of alpine plants, and some of the best mountain foliage in Japan. The view from the summit on a clear day offers a 360-degree bird's eye view of the famous peaks of Tohoku, including Mt.
