What is Tsugaru Kokeshi Dolls?

Kokeshi dolls are becoming increasingly popular among young women and foreigners. There are three main types of kokeshi dolls: traditional kokeshi, new kokeshi, and creative kokeshi. In this article, we will focus on the Tsugaru kokeshi, which is produced in Kuroishi City, Aomori Prefecture. Tsugaru kokeshi dolls are characterized by their "okappa" head, narrow body, and wide feet, and are generally made from a single piece of wood using the "Tsukitsuke" technique, with patterns said to have been influenced by Nebuta paintings. First of all, you will see this jumbo kokeshi doll on your left as you enter the entrance. This is the largest jumbo kokeshi in Japan and stands 4.2195 meters tall! Together with a huge wooden daruma doll weighing 755 kg next to it, it makes a great souvenir photo!

In the exhibition space, not only Tsugaru kokeshi works created by artisans, but also kokeshi made in various regions in Tohoku, such as Naruko and Yamagata, are on display.
