Do you know the popular okonomiyaki restaurant in the basement of "CiC" just in front of the south exit of Toyama Station? Recently, the restaurant has been introduced on TV programs and in magazines as a B-class gourmet restaurant that Toyama residents are passionate about, and it is a popular restaurant that attracts many customers from both inside and outside of the prefecture. This time, we would like to introduce you to the unique square and fluffy okonomiyaki served at the restaurant!
Botejan Tanaka has been a longtime favorite in front of Toyama Station. From its famous okonomiyaki to yakisoba, modern-yaki, and other set menus and lunches are popular here. This time we visited around 5:30 p.m. on a weekday evening, and there were already many people waiting for their turn! (If you write your name on the board in front of the restaurant, you will be about the sixth person on the waiting list.) A sign at the entrance of the restaurant reads, "Normally, it takes about 30 to 40 minutes to finish cooking. In this case, the only thing to do is to wait for the customers who entered the restaurant immediately after the opening to finish eating and come out. However, since most of the people in line were prepared to wait in line, no one complained, and in fact, everyone had a "I knew it" look on their face. It is clear how long the lines are usually for this restaurant. On this particular day, we were able to enter the restaurant after a 40-minute wait, but depending on the timing, the wait can be as long as two hours. We recommend that you come early.
Boteyan's okonomiyaki is characterized by its square shape and addictive mayonnaise. If you sit at the counter, you can watch the okonomiyaki being made right in front of you. The sight of the large rectangles lined up in a row is a sight to behold. Before sauce or mayonnaise is applied, the okonomiyaki looks less and less like okonomiyaki, doesn't it? Since it takes time for the okonomiyaki to be cooked, many customers seem to be eating yakisoba while waiting. (If you order okonomiyaki and yakisoba at the same time, the yakisoba will be served relatively early.)
Here is the finished okonomiyaki! The outside is fragrant and the inside is soft and fluffy. It is a new texture with a fragrant outside and a fluffy inside. It is also very hearty with a lot of finely chopped cabbage. First, sauce and ketchup are spread on top, and then a generous amount of homemade mayonnaise is piled on top, which goes perfectly with the thick batter. The sweet spicy mayonnaise is addictive. This time, I ordered the "mixed ball," and it was a perfect combination of squid, pork, shrimp, and many other ingredients. It is a one-of-a-kind dish that can only be enjoyed here, and one that you will want to eat again and again.
Basically, you should be prepared to wait to go to this restaurant, but take-out is also available. Reservations for take-out are accepted only by phone, and please note that there are times when it is difficult to get through. When it comes to okonomiyaki, Hiroshima and Osaka have a strong image, but why not try the unique okonomiyaki of "Botejan Tanaka" when you visit Toyama Station?
