Goryokaku was established after the arrival of the black ships

The year after the arrival of the black ships in Uraga in 1853, Hakodate (Hakodate was written this way until the Meiji Era) along with Shimoda Hakodate became an open port city, and the "Hakodate Magistrate" was appointed.
Goryokaku was eventually built as part of Hakodate's defensive measures.
On the second floor of the Goryokaku Tower's observation deck, there is an exhibition space where visitors can learn about the history of Goryokaku.
Visitors can learn about the history of Goryokaku, and while gazing at the view from the tower, think back to Hakodate at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Goryokaku is also famous for its cherry blossoms. About 1,500 cherry trees, including Someiyoshino cherry trees, signal the arrival of full-blown spring.

The current Goryokaku Tower, which opened on April 1, 2006, is 107 meters high, and the second observation floor is 90 meters high.
The pentagonal shape of the observation deck was created in a very unusual way.
The observation deck was built on the ground around the tower and transported to the top of the tower using wires.
It took 27 hours to lift it up. The monitor in the elevator hall shows the scene. Please take a look at it as well.
