Did you know that there is a rolling stock center in Omiya? This time, we would like to introduce JR East Omiya General Rolling Stock Center, which has a history of more than 120 years.
The current Omiya General Rolling Stock Center was established in 1894 as the Train Section of the Operations Department of the then Japan Railway Company. After that, it was called "Omiya Works" for a long time, but in 2004, it was renamed to its current name, "Omiya General Rolling Stock Center.

Omiya has long flourished as a railroad town, and has developed together with the railroads to this day. The Omiya General Rolling Stock Center inspects and repairs express trains and commuter trains that run in the Tokyo metropolitan area, which we use on a daily basis. In addition, the Omiya General Rolling Stock Center also performs various modification works and inspections of SLs, etc. It can be said that we can use the railroads with peace of mind thanks to the people who work here.

The Omiya General Rolling Stock Center is very spacious, and there is a machine called a traverser that carries trains and moves them sideways.
First, a diesel locomotive brings the train in from the entrance line. Then, the traverser moves the train to the next level, where it undergoes inspection. After all the inspections are completed, the trains go out on the exit line after a test run and final checks.

This is a car moving machine called "Ant. The ant pulls the cars to be inspected and repaired.

At the annual Omiya Railway Fureai Fair, visitors can tour the spacious rolling stock center free of charge. The exhibition of electric locomotives and hands-on train rides are very popular and attract many visitors every year.
Outside the Omiya General Rolling Stock Center, there is a D51187 SL permanently installed and the RAILWAY GARDEN PROMENADE. On the way to the Railway Museum, there are panels with photos and explanations of trains on display, so it is a good idea to visit the museum while looking at them.
