Shoboji Temple is proud to be the former third head temple of the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism, and its thatched-roof Dharma hall is a sight to behold. It is considered to have one of the largest thatched roofs in Japan.
The history of Shoboji Temple is long, and the main hall, built in 1811, and the Somon gate, constructed around 1655, are nationally designated as important cultural properties. Shobo-ji Temple has a different look around the large thatched roof in each of the four seasons. Sometimes the contrast between the bright fresh greenery and the large thatched roof is beautiful, sometimes it is surrounded by reddish maple leaves, and in winter, the thatched roof is covered with snow, which is fascinating.

In addition to the large thatched roof, Shoboji Temple also offers Zen meditation sessions at certain times of the day to help regulate the body, mind, and breath. Those who are interested in meditation and zazen, and those who seek a moment of peace and tranquility are encouraged to try it.

If you apply in advance, you can also experience a vegetarian meal in a building designated as a nationally important cultural property. Please experience meat-free cuisine that does not use any animal products, focuses on seasonal ingredients, and is environmentally and animal friendly♪.
