National Institute of Polar Research Antarctic & Arctic Science Museum

The National Institute of Polar Research opened the Antarctic Science Museum in July 2010. It introduces what kind of observation and research activities are being conducted in Antarctica and the Arctic. It is a public relations and exhibition facility that informs visitors about "the present state of Antarctica and the North Pole". The museum has interesting exhibits to let many people know about polar science and polar observation. Admission is free and photography is free.

Watch out for the exhibits and videos!

Since the Antarctic & Arctic Science Museum is affiliated with the National Institute of Polar Research, actual items are on display! Some were used in Antarctic observations, some are still in use, and others are items that we are going to take off display and take with us depending on our observation plans! The specimens are real!

Among the real exhibits are a snowmobile that drove 5,200 km round trip to the South Pole in 1968 (this one is almost exactly as it looked back then), extraterrestrial materials (meteorites), and earth-born stones (rocks), which can be observed with a polarized light microscope.
*Some exhibits are currently closed, so please check the official website for the latest information.

TACHI Aurora Theater

The TACHIHI Aurora Theater in the museum has an all-sky dome-shaped aurora theater with a diameter of 4 meters. Researchers have actually filmed the images for research purposes, and you can only see them here! You can see the original data footage. Why do auroras glow? Where can we see them? We will explore the mysteries of the mysterious light full of wonders! You can also see images of the real Showa Station (Japan's Antarctic observation base) using satellite links!

The Antarctic & Arctic Science Museum is a facility where you can take your time to learn and experience. There are still many things to see inside and outside the museum!
