Morioka's Coffee Shops: Part 5 (of 8)

Did you know that April 13 is "Coffee Shop Day" because Japan's first authentic coffee shop, Kaiyanchakan, opened in Ueno, Tokyo?
We will introduce a series of recommended stores from Morioka, a city with many attractive coffee shops and cafes.

A long-established coffee shop with a view of central Morioka

In spring, violets bloom and steam comes out of the coffee cup on the sign to entertain you. (Taken from the Chuo Dori side of the street)
Rubian is located at the intersection of Movie Theater Street and Chuo Street in the center of Morioka.
It was founded in 1972. It is also a coffee shop that has straddled three different eras since the Showa period and has continued to watch the city of Morioka transform with the times from its prime location.
As the name "Movie Theater Street" suggests, Morioka had a flourishing movie culture, which is rare for a regional city, with a concentration of movie theaters in the city.
The same building as Lubian has a movie theater, and the concept of a "movie theater" and "coffee shop" was decided upon from the beginning of the building's construction, an atmosphere that continues to be preserved even today, 50 years later.
The character of the Rubian begins at the entrance. The Chuo-dori side is lined with government offices, while the Movie Theater Street side is a thriving entertainment district, but you can enter from either side.
As you leisurely look around the store, you will see businessmen from the Chuo-dori side and young girls dressed up in cute clothes from the cinema street. ...... Yes, the appearance of the customers changes depending on the entrance, which is one of the interesting and attractive features of Rubian.

A place where both deliciousness and social networking are possible!

The fruit parfait in front of me makes my heart sing at any age.
Parfaits and cream sodas are especially popular at this long-established coffee shop.
There are four types of parfaits: fruit, strawberry, chocolate, and banana, all of which are well-loved by customers. When you order one, you will understand why.
In addition to the gorgeous appearance that makes your heart jump the moment it is brought to your table, what is unique about this parfait is the whipped cream.
When you put a spoon in and bring it to your mouth along with the fruit, you will feel a strange sensation. Try it again, this time with ice cream, and you will notice a strange sensation.
It is a sensation of melting smoothly.
This cream is all made in the store.
The texture when the creaminess of the cream and the sweetness of the ice cream are mixed together is a surprise that you cannot experience in a normal parfait, and the deliciousness of the combination is like an answer to the question that comes to your face.
The purple cream soda is rare and shines like an amethyst.

Not only does it look pretty, but so does this cream soda.
Speaking of coffee shops, have you ever had the experience of being divided between parfait and cream soda groups when you were little?
Here at Lubyan, we have a cream soda that will sway even the most genuine parfait fan.
The five colors of cream soda that are definitely Instagram-worthy are "green," "blue," "red," "orange," and "purple.
The ice cream floats rather than sits on the ice, the lush bubbles enhance the visual delights, and the glistening cherries are a beautiful sight on their own, but two or three colors in a row is a spectacular sight.
The cream soda is the same as the one that was made in Tokyo when the shop was first established, and you can enjoy the same taste as before.
By the way, can you guess what flavor the purple cream soda in the photo is?
After taking your time to taste it, please ask at the store.

The secret of coffee flavor

The cuteness of the sugar pot enhances the deliciousness of the fruit parfait.
When you eat something sweet, you will want to drink coffee.
Of course, a cup of coffee is a luxury for adults to enjoy the aroma and tranquility of the moment.
Rubian's coffee is siphoned. Coffee brewed with a siphon continues to retain its deep flavor over time, and has a different aroma and taste than coffee brewed with a drip.
The upper cylindrical part of the siphon is called the "roto" and the lower spherical part is called the "flask," and the method of coffee extraction is based on the property of air pressure generated when the water in the flask is heated by an alcohol lamp.
Influenced by a TV drama, some people came all the way to see the siphon. This brewing method has many fans not only for its flavor, but also for the dramatic way the process of brewing coffee looks.
Water-dripping coffee equipment. It is brewed using mineral water.

Iced coffee is usually associated with summer, but Rubian's iced coffee is a must-try all year round.
The Dutch method of brewing coffee is a slow brewing method using water.
At Lubian, the coffee is brewed drop by drop over several hours. This is why it produces iced coffee that is mellow and pleasant to the tongue.
Even if it takes a long time, it is their policy not to leave the coffee unmade. Enjoy the flavor of the day.

I was shown the flask they use. They look like jewels reflecting the scenery.
Next to the counter, a quote by Talleyrand, a French diplomat who was once the subject of a mystery novel, is quietly displayed.
What you can sense from Rubian's coffee is that it is old, yet new, and yet still has a sense of conviction.
When we spoke to the store, we were told that they place great importance on taking the time to carefully prepare each item on their menu.
While fashionable-looking and appealing menus are all the rage, sparing the time and effort to make them is also a matter of sincerity.
Our luxurious time may be supported by the invisible sincerity that can be felt from every drop of coffee.

Enjoy the atmosphere of the store!

The ornaments in the store are lovely.
Finally, I would like to introduce one more device for your enjoyment.
Various works of art decorate the inside and outside of Rubian's store.
There is a kappa figurine in front of the store, and people sometimes ask why it is placed there. It is said that it was placed there to make waiting at long traffic lights at intersections more enjoyable, and people sometimes take pictures of it. The kappas stand on both the Chuo-dori side and the movie theater side of the street, gently watching over passersby.
The same goes for the paintings and other objects inside the store. They are not only displayed as beautiful objects of appreciation, but they are also the embodiment of the desire to create a space that can be enjoyed by all visitors, no matter who they are.
So, what do you enjoy when you open the door of Rubian?
The Italian lighting and the view of the city make for a lingering memory.
