The iron kettle mark is a landmark!

Morioka's Coffee Shops: Part 6 (of 8)

Did you know that April 13 is "Coffee Shop Day" because Japan's first genuine coffee shop, "Kanake Chakan," opened in Ueno, Tokyo?
We will introduce a series of recommended stores from Morioka, a city with many attractive coffee shops and cafes.

How about a cup of coffee brewed in an iron kettle?

The Nakanobashi-dori neighborhood is lined with many historical buildings not far from the Morioka Bus Center.
Tea and Tetsubin Engawa" is located on the first floor of the former Karatakeshi Keisakukan, directly across from the Morioka Takuboku/Kenji Youth Museum.
The master, Mr. Saito, who was born in Sendai, moved to Morioka because he was attracted by the beauty of Morioka. Later, he met Mr. Tayama, the representative of Tayama Studio, which produces the tetsubin brand "kanakeno," and opened this store as a cafe and tetsubin gallery in August 2019. It is very cute with a retro look and feel.

First, you will receive a cup of white water brewed in an iron kettle to set your mind at ease. The coffee beans are from BOUND COFFEE in Zaimoku-cho, Morioka City.
The master spent about a year after starting his store in Morioka to find the right beans. He changes the brewing time to match the hot water in the iron kettle.

The cheesecake of the day was filled with kumquat from Miyazaki. The cheesecake is voluminous and smooth enough to be easily inserted with a fork. The cheesecake is so smooth that a fork can easily fit through it, and the crunchy dough on the bottom layer mixes with the cheesecake in the mouth, creating a delightful texture. The tea syrup served with the cheesecake changes depending on the day, so it is exciting to see what kind of tea leaves they use!

By the way, did you know that water boiled in an iron kettle does not go well with black tea?
While it is effective for iron intake because of the iron content, it is said that the tannin in black tea reacts with the iron, causing an astringent taste. For this reason, "Ocha to Tetsubin Engawa" makes a point of not using water boiled in an iron kettle for black tea.
The tea is made from aromatic tea leaves from Palais de Dédée, carefully selected by the master, who originally ran a tea specialty store in Sendai.

The Japanese-style room in the back of the store also houses a gallery of tetsubin tetsubin, and the dedicated staff will carefully explain how to use tetsubin and various trivia related to tetsubin.
Whether you are interested in purchasing an tetsubin or not, you will feel more familiar with tetsubin just by listening to what they have to say.

Kin-ki, or rust, is often viewed negatively, but there are advantages to accepting kin-ki, such as the fact that iron's unique properties make it possible to take in iron and drink delicious hot water.
With the desire to look at the meaning, value, and way of being of such kaneiki, the brand name "kanakeno" was born by adding the particle "no" to "kanake".
The works in the gallery are traditional crafts with the skill of a master craftsman. Every detail is finished to perfection.

Mr. Saito enthusiastically states that he would like to continue to convey the qualities of Morioka and tetsubin inside and outside of the prefecture. We were impressed by his passionate desire to share his passion for tetsubin with the rest of the prefecture and beyond. We are looking forward to the new plans he has in the works.
In addition to the menu introduced here, there are also daily lunch specials, sweets, and alcoholic beverages for adults.
The "special Neapolitan" that you can encounter if your timing is good is exquisite!
Spend an elegant time while admiring the nostalgic building and tetsubin (iron kettle).
