The "Iba Betsuin Zuisenji Temple" in Iba, Nanto City, has an appearance befitting of "Iba, a town of wood carvings" recognized as a Japanese Heritage Site. The building was destroyed by fire three times during the Taisho and Meiji periods.
Many carpenters and craftsmen who excelled at carving were involved in the rebuilding, and the transmission of their skills marked the beginning of Iba's carving tradition.
The gate, main hall, Taishido, and other areas of Zuisenji Temple in Iba Betsuin are decorated with works that can be described as the essence of Iba sculpture, allowing visitors to appreciate the high level of skill involved in Iba sculpture. The temple has a majestic appearance, but in May, beautiful wisteria flowers bloom on the wisteria trellis in front of the main hall, soothing the hearts of visitors.
The wisteria, said to be more than 80 years old, is about 3 meters tall, with vines spreading out over 120 square meters, and the flowers emit a sweet fragrance. Why not enjoy the collaboration of the inherited beauty of sculptures carved by our ancestors and the beautiful light purple wisteria flowers?
