Italian restaurant converted from a merchant's tatami warehouse

During the Edo period (1603-1868), the Tone River was developed to carry rice for the feudal domain to Edo by boat, and Sawara prospered to the extent that it was called "Edo Yuri" (Edo is the name for Edo's capital). On both banks of the Ono River, the townscape still retains the atmosphere of Edo. Sawara s historical townscape was selected as an "Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings" for the first time in the Kanto region in 1996. The trattoria introduced here, Antique Antique, is a converted tatami storehouse of Nakamuraya Shoten (founded in 1874), and the original tracks of the trolley that used to carry tatami mats still remain on the floor. The building of Nakamuraya Shoten was constructed in 1855 and is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Chiba Prefecture.

A merchant's house and elegant interior in Koedo

The interior of the store is European in style, in contrast to the traditional Japanese house structure, and the owner's attention to detail can be seen in the century-old antique tables and the unique table with a foot-pedal sewing machine. There is also a collection of vinyl records in the back, and the music seems to create a wonderful atmosphere during dinner time. The extensive wine list is one of the best in Chiba Prefecture and well worth a visit for wine lovers. The second floor is also available for restaurant weddings.
