Winter Blooming Sakura Light-up

2600 cherry trees of about 50 species bloom in Hirosaki Park

Hirosaki Park is famous for the annual Hirosaki Sakura Festival held from late April to early May. It is said to be "one of the three best nighttime cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan" and "a spectacular sight to see before you die," and is a popular spot where tourists from all over the world gather to see 2,600 cherry trees of about 50 varieties in full bloom at the same time. The flower rafts that appear along the outer moat of Hirosaki Park are especially popular cherry blossom viewing spots, and the sight of fallen cherry petals filling the moat looks like a carpet of cherry blossoms.

In order to enjoy the cherry blossoms in Hirosaki Park in winter, "Winter Blooming Sakura Light-up" started in December 2017.

To be held from December 1, 2023 (Fri.)! Cherry Blossoms Blooming in Winter Light-up

Popular spot on the outer moat
The "Winter Blooming Cherry Blossoms Light-Up" is a light-up event that can be best viewed when there is snow on the ground, as is typical in Hirosaki in midwinter. The snow floating on the outer moat looks like a flower raft, or on a blizzard day, it looks like a blizzard of cherry blossoms. Especially on nights when there is a lot of snow on the branches of the cherry trees, and when the water in the moat freezes after a cold day, "snow flower rafts" are more likely to appear.
Hirosaki covered with snow will be dyed with lights up.
According to our observations over the past 6 seasons, snow generally begins to accumulate in earnest in late December, and the "best viewing time" tends to be from late December to early January and from early to mid February.
Days with more precipitation tend to have better visibility.

The illumination is popular every year as a winter tradition in Hirosaki. Hirosaki City is a castle town, but on the other hand, it is a high-color town with many Western-style buildings from the Meiji and Taisho periods. During the illumination period, the city's cultural assets, such as existing Western-style buildings, will be illuminated, as well as various other places in the city.
