The area around the Uchikawa River, which flows through the Shinminato district in Imizu City, Toyama Prefecture, is a small port town with a nostalgic old-fashioned atmosphere, the scent of the sea, and a rich maritime history and culture of fishing life. Fishing boats for set nets line up along the gentle curve of the Uchikawa River, 12 different types of bridges are full of character, and private houses stand side by side along the river. Recently, it has become a popular filming location for movies and TV dramas.
In this issue, we would like to introduce a wonderful café located in Uchikawa!
Cafe uchikawa Rokkakudo specializes in organic coffee and sandwiches. It is located near the Higashi-bashi Bridge, which stands out among the bridges that span the Uchikawa River for its conspicuous "bengara" color. Located on the corner of a three-way street, the building is characterized by the unusual hexagonal shape of a square house cut off twice at the corners. The then 70-year-old vacant house, which was originally a tatami mat shop, was renovated and opened in January 2013.

The amazing thing about this restaurant is its attention to ingredients. The owner's wish is to "make a world where food safety is taken for granted," so he uses seasonal organic ingredients in his sandwiches and other menu items whenever possible, and he makes sure that everything he uses for cooking is free of chemical seasonings, preservatives, and other additives. If there are unavoidable circumstances that require the use of ingredients that are not organic or additive-free, we make sure to list them on the menu. The menu and website also include information about the farmers in and outside of the prefecture from whom they purchase their ingredients, so if you are interested, please take a look at it.
Salmon & cream cheese sandwich
The bread used for the sandwiches is imported frozen as dough from a French bakery and baked at the restaurant! It is baked to order, so it is freshly baked, crispy, and chewy when it comes out. The bread is baked to order, so it is freshly baked and chewy when it comes out. The quality of the bread alone is quite satisfying, but when combined with carefully selected ingredients, it is outstandingly delicious. On this day, we were served the store's two most popular sandwiches!
The "Salmon & Cream Cheese Sandwich," the No. 1 seller, is such a classic that who doesn't like this combination? Who doesn't like this combination? It is sandwiched in a large croissant and is very satisfying, with the aroma of fermented butter and black pepper accents.
Rokkakudo Reuben Sandwich
The No. 2 popular "Rokkakudo Reuben Sandwich" is a New York classic Reuben Sandwich arranged in a Rokkakudo style. The special corned beef, mild cheese, and sauerkraut with just the right amount of sourness. I like mustard, so I personally enjoyed the seasoning. This sandwich uses ciabatta, a typical Italian meal bread. They change the type of bread depending on the sandwich, so I will try other flavors next time I go! It was a bit expensive, but I was interested in the sandwich with red snow crab from Shinminato.

Please note that this is an adult café that does not allow people under 13 years old, so people with children cannot enter. On Saturdays and Sundays, the restaurant is very crowded with reservations, and even if you arrive around 11:30 a.m., the opening time, you may not be shown to your seat until around 1:00 p.m. If you want to spend a relaxing time in a quiet restaurant, weekdays are recommended. If the weather is nice, you can take out a sandwich and eat it on a bench near the East Bridge or while strolling along the Uchigawa River.
And as a side note, if you visit this restaurant, be sure to go into the restroom at least once. You will be surprised to see what kind of interior design it has.
If you are going by car, please note that there are many narrow streets in this area. Rokkakudo's parking lot is located a short distance away from the store, but you can see the yellow sign!
