Shiogama Shrine is located on a hill overlooking Matsushima Bay and is the symbol of Shiogama City, worshipped as the god of safe delivery, long life, safety at sea, great catch of fish, family safety, and traffic safety. The shrine has a long history and is said to have been founded in the Nara period (710-794), as it is mentioned in the "Kouninshiki" compiled in the early Heian period (794-1185). The museum is located on the shrine grounds and exhibits important cultural properties designated by the national government, as well as traditional treasures and materials related to the salt industry and fishing industry associated with the Shiogama Shrine's main deities. The shrine is visited by many tourists as well as locals throughout the year, and is especially crowded with visitors on New Year's visits and when the Shiogama cherry tree, designated as a natural monument, is in full bloom. The front approach to the shrine is also known as "Otokozaka," a steep 202-step stone staircase that is a sight to behold both looking up and down. If you are confident in your physical strength, why not visit the shrine from here?
