The Shinkagishi River flows through Sayama, Kawagoe, and Wako Cities in Saitama Prefecture, enters Tokyo at Itabashi Ward, and joins the Sumida River in Kita Ward, extending 33.7 km. It has 10 branch rivers including the Yanase River, the Meguro River, and the Shirako River.

A superb view! Hanarikuwaiku (flower rafts), a tradition in Koedo Kawagoe

The Shinkagishi River, which flows behind Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine, is crowded with people walking and viewing cherry blossoms in early April, when the cherry trees are all in full bloom, and someiyoshino cherry trees line the river for about 500 meters. Hana-naikuiku, or flower rafts, is another characteristic of Koedo-Kawagoe, and is based on the image of a raft of scattered petals floating on the surface of the water. Hanami boats that operate for only one day during the hanaraft season offer a spectacular view of the cherry petals flowing all over the surface of the water.
