Kanazawa City in Ishikawa Prefecture is home to many facilities that preserve its history and culture. Kanazawa is home to many attractive sightseeing spots, but one of the most popular is Kenrokuen Garden, one of the three most famous gardens in Japan. In this issue, we will introduce the charms of Kenrokuen Garden.

Kenrokuen Garden, one of the three most famous gardens in Japan

Kenrokuen is located about 2 hours and 30 minutes from Tokyo Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen Line, and about 15 minutes by bus and on foot from Kanazawa Station, the gateway to Ishikawa Prefecture. Kenrokuen Garden is one of the three most famous gardens in Japan, along with Kairakuen Garden in Mito and Korakuen Garden in Okayama, and is a large garden with a variety of elements scattered throughout its vast grounds in the kaiyushiki style. It is said that the successive lords who ruled Kaga spent a long time creating this garden with the wish for longevity and eternal prosperity.

Kenrokuen Garden, with its fascinating seasonal scenery in spring and summer.

Visitors to Kenrokuen can enjoy the beauty of the garden throughout the year. In spring, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and more than 400 trees of about 40 varieties turn pink. For a limited time only, the garden is illuminated at night to reflect the cherry blossoms, so please check the official website of Kenrokuen for details. In summer, the leaves of the trees in the park are lush and green, allowing visitors to enjoy the lush green of the garden. Looking out over the waterfront from the shade of a tree, you will feel cool even in the hot summer.

Autumn and winter in Kenrokuen Garden, where the scenery changes from season to season

In the fall, the leaves of the maple trees, zelkova trees, and other trees in the garden turn red and yellow, creating a beautiful contrast with the green of the pine trees under a bright blue sky. From November 1 every year, the "Yuki-hanging," a winter tradition at Kenrokuen, is held. Starting from the Karasaki pine tree, which has the most magnificent branches in Kenrokuen, five core posts are erected around the pine tree, and the branches are hung with a total of about 800 ropes. The snow hanging work, in which craftsmen's skill shines through, is carried out until mid-December, and is applied to about 800 trees of various sizes in the park.

Don't miss it! Kenrokuen Fountain, said to be the oldest fountain in Japan

There is one place that must be seen when visiting Kenrokuen. It is the fountain in the center of Kenrokuen, which is fed by Kasumigaike Pond. This fountain is naturally powered by water pressure due to the difference in height between the pond and the surface of the water. It is said to be the oldest fountain in Japan, and was built as a prototype to supply water to the Ninomaru area of Kanazawa Castle at the end of the feudal domain era.
