Toyama Bay is blessed with such a wide variety of seafood that it is called a "natural cesspool. Among them, the Shinminato fishing port in Imizu City is known as one of the best fishing grounds in the prefecture. Located right in front of the fishing port, "Kittokito Shokudo" offers set menus and seafood bowls using fresh fish caught that day!

Kittokito" means "fresh" or "lively" in the dialect of Toyama Prefecture. Kittokito means "fresh" or "lively" in the Toyama dialect. You will often hear this word used in places that serve fresh seafood, such as the nearby Shinminato Kittokito Market and Himi Kittokito Sushi, a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant located in and outside of Toyama Prefecture.

Kittokito Shokudo is a popular restaurant that attracts not only locals but also many customers from outside the prefecture, as it offers fresh and tasty fish at a reasonable price. One of the most popular dishes is the "fishmonger's bowl of rice topped with fish and vegetables"! The price is a surprising one-coin for such a large portion. In exchange, the restaurant does not include miso soup and pickled vegetables, which are included in other rice bowl menus, so we ordered a small size of "kake-chu", a local delicacy of Shinminato, in addition. Looking around, I saw many customers ordering this combination, so I tried to copy them.

The zuke-don is a bowl of rice topped with a bowl of pickled fish, and the volume and taste are both very satisfying! The kake-chu was also delicious with a nice accent of yam kelp, which Toyama residents love. Kittokito Shokudo also offers many other local seafood dishes such as Kaisen-don (bowl of rice topped with seafood) with red snow crab and white shrimp, and cream croquettes with white shrimp. It is also nice that the diner is open early in the morning and retains its old-fashioned atmosphere.

Shinminato Fishing Port is also famous for its "noon auction," a rarity in Japan, and during the red snow crab season (September through April), a "crab hut" is open. This is an especially good spot to visit in the coming season, so be sure to take a round trip around the Shinminato area!
