Tatsuguchi Onsen Matsusaki, Tengo Open-air Bath
On a certain day of a certain month, we stayed at Tatsuguchi Onsen. Tatsuguchi Onsen is a secluded hot spring resort about 40 minutes by car from Kanazawa Station. Many people think of Wakura Onsen and Kaga Onsenkyo when they think of Ishikawa Prefecture, but Tatsuguchi Onsen is very popular among locals because of its proximity to Kanazawa City, even though there are only three ryokan (Japanese-style inns). I was taken care of at one of them, Matsusaki.
Elegant corridor
From the parking lot to the entrance lobby, there is a long corridor. This corridor is very tasteful, and the staff politely explains the garden to us as we walk along while admiring the garden spreading out on both sides of the corridor.
Entrance lobby and exhibits
Upon entering the entranceway, one is greeted by a magnificent borrowed landscape. On display in the lobby is a folding screen from the Tale of Genji, which has been handed down in the ryokan, as well as an inkstone box and a collection of strips of calligraphy by Kyoka Izumi, a writer from Ishikawa Prefecture, who was a favorite of the ryokan. Kyoka Izumi was one of the most famous novelists of the Meiji era. It is said that Kyoka wrote "The Time the Sea Cries" set in Matsusaki while staying at this ryokan. You can feel the history of the ryokan from such a place! Incidentally, the "Kyoka Izumi Memorial Museum" in Kanazawa City exhibits works and items related to Kyoka, so it might be a good idea to visit there as well.
Room 202 "Shigi" in the new annex Houou
The guest room this time is "Shigi" on the second floor of the new "Houou" building. The room is very magnificent, as it is named "Houou" (phoenix)! The open-air bath, moon-viewing garden, and massage chair next to the bed... The purpose of this stay was "to relax and heal in the guest room," so this is exactly what I wanted. The Japanese-style room is not in the form of sitting on a cushion, but a high-legged table and chairs are provided. It was somewhat strange, but since my elderly mother was with me this time, I was glad that she did not have to bend her legs this way.
There is a walking path in the large garden.
Before taking a bath, we took a walk in the large garden. Although there was still a lot of greenery, you could feel the signs of autumn.
Tea ceremony room
Next, we decided to have matcha green tea and sweets in the tea room. There are two tea rooms, and you can drink in the room of your choice while enjoying the view of the garden you just strolled through. Not only in the guest rooms, but also in the garden and the tea rooms, you can firmly feel an extraordinary experience.
Inside the building with a retro atmosphere
There are also other retro items in the museum that are hard to find. Just looking at them is an enjoyable experience.
The open-air baths in the guest rooms also have free-flowing hot-spring water!
Both the indoor and outdoor hot spring baths in the guest rooms are free-flowing source baths. Of course, you can also use the large public baths and the open-air bath with a view in the hotel, so you can go on a hot-spring tour.
Dinner is served in your room!
The dinner you have been waiting for is served in your guest room. The next meal was served at just the right time. We listened to the staff's careful explanations and slowly savored each dish as we looked at the menu. It was a moment of bliss.
A set of locally brewed sake to compare!
And with a good meal comes a good sake. We enjoyed a set of sake from Ishikawa Prefecture, a local sake, to compare, and the perfect marriage of sake and meal.
Breakfast is also plentiful!
In the morning, when you open the window, the pleasant air of the garden comes into the room and makes you feel refreshed. The sumptuous breakfast served in such a setting was also complete, despite the fact that we had finished dinner. For both dinner and breakfast, rice was cooked in a pot. This is the best part of a ryokan meal.
Thank you for seeing us off!
The time we spent at the ryokan went by very quickly. It was a short but very fulfilling time. Finally, the proprietress saw us off. With her kind smile, I headed home, hoping to see her again someday. Matsusaki" was a very nice ryokan with a quiet and relaxing atmosphere with a history and today's refined taste.
