Did you know that there is a promenade surrounded by greenery just outside of Yokohama Station?

Due to the mutual direct connection between the Minato Mirai Line and the Tokyu Toyoko Line, the section between Higashishiraku Station and Yokohama Station, which once ran above ground, was converted to underground service, and the former site is now used by local residents as the "Toyoko Flower Greenway".

The history of the area can be seen everywhere along the Greenway, especially in the "Takashimayama Tunnel," which was used as a railroad tunnel. Today, many people walk through the tunnel as a promenade, but when the railroad was running, did it go around the mountain? It is interesting to walk along the path while thinking about such things. There used to be Kanagawa Station on the Tokyu Toyoko Line in this area.

As soon as you exit the tunnel, you will see Sorimachi Station on the Tokyu Toyoko Line. After passing Sorimachi Station, the greenway is elevated over National Route 1, where the Toyoko Line used to run. The railway bridge, which was in place before it was converted to an underground structure, is now part of the Toyoko Flower Greenway.
After descending from the bridge, you will walk on the ground for a while.
As it is called "Flower Greenway," it is a comfortable walking space with trees and flowerbeds. Depending on the time of year, you can see beautiful flowers. It is a nice place to take a leisurely stroll.

A phantom station existed?

As you walk along the greenway through the residential area, you will come to a large open plaza. There used to be a station here called Shintaicho until 1945. No buildings remain, but a monument has been erected nearby, indicating that the Tokyu Toyoko Line was connected to Sakuragi-cho Station. Many of you may have fresh memories of this place.

After passing this place, Higashi Hakuraku Station is already just a stone's throw away. This is also the end of the Higashi Yoko Flower Greenway.
The greenway is an easy 1.4 km walk and the station is close by, so it is recommended as a short detour or stroll course on your way home. Why not visit when you come to Yokohama?
The information is current as of August 2021.
