Sanada Shrine, located in the Ueda Castle Ruins Park, is dedicated to the Sanada, Sengoku, and Matsudaira clans, the successive lords of Ueda Castle. The shrine is popular for prayers for success and victory in the castle, which was twice defeated by the Tokugawa forces.
On the shrine grounds, there is a huge deer horn Wakidate Shu-nuri helmet said to have been worn by Lord Nobushige (Yukimura) Sanada, and the Sanada Well, which was also the only large well in the castle. In August 2020, a bronze statue of Yukimura (Nobushige) Sanada as a young man was erected in the image of Yukimura during the First Battle of Ueda, which is said to be his first battle.
Incidentally, legend has it that there was a loophole in the Sanada Well that led to the northern part of Hakuchi, the foot of Mt.
Why not visit the temple and feel the Sanada Clan's presence while enjoying the blessings of the shrine?
