Welcome to the Sensory Museum

What is the Sensory Museum like?

The eye-catching exterior of the Sensory Museum
The Sensory Museum was established in August 2000 in Iwadeyama, northwestern Miyagi Prefecture. It is the first museum in Japan to focus on the senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch.
The purpose of the museum is to help people regain a sense of comfort and spiritual richness, which we tend to lose in our material civilization, by improving our senses and enhancing our imagination through sensory experiences.
The museum is filled with exhibits that make visitors aware of their senses through the experience of seeing, hearing, touching, and smelling, so that all generations, from children to adults, can enjoy and enhance their imaginations through a variety of experiences.

Many exhibits stimulate the imagination!

The Sensory Museum's exhibits consist of three zones: the Dialogue Zone (physical sensory space), the Monologue Zone (meditation space), and the Traverse Zone, which connects each space.

Dialogue Zone (bodily sensation space)
This is a space where visitors can experience a virtual dialogue (dialogue) between the creator and the viewer through the exhibition based on the theme of bodily sensation.

Monologue Zone (Meditation Space)
With the theme of the mental senses, the exhibits and the space for the production inspire the imagination of the visitors, gradually making them forget their everyday senses and inviting them to a world of meditation.
Air Traverse
Heart Dome
Air Traverse (Traverse Zone)
The ceiling is made of glass and the walls and floor are covered with mirrors, creating a mysterious kaleidoscope-like space that incorporates the sky. Visitors can also feel a floating sensation as if they are walking in the air. The atmosphere changes with the weather and time of day, so it is a good idea to visit during various seasons and times.

■ Heart Dome (Monologue Zone)
The exterior of the dome is a heart-shaped structure that has become a familiar symbol of the Sensory Museum.
The interior of the dome is designed to resemble an infinite expanse of space, and the subtle fragrance of the air will soothe you. In the center of the dome is a lacquered bathtub that resembles a bath, where visitors can relax and rest their bodies.
Visitors can listen to the music playing quietly and enjoy the fantastically changing colors. It is also a good place to lose track of time and slowly immerse yourself in a world of meditation.

Aroma Forest

The "Forest of Fragrance" is composed of Tomoko Ishida's paper twist art and Toshifumi Yoshitake's fragrance production.

In the softly textured space, fragrances based on the nature of Iwadeyama and sounds played by nature will spread.
