There are many varieties of strawberries in Japan, each with a different flavor. Tochigi Prefecture is one of the leading strawberry production areas in Japan! This time, we will introduce four strawberry farms in Tochigi Prefecture where you can enjoy picking Tochiaika strawberries, as recommended by the editorial department of *and trip. Some facilities also offer cafes and souvenirs, so you can spend a special time with your family or friends.

What is "Tochiaika"?

Tochiaika is the tenth original variety developed by Tochigi Prefecture; it was first shipped in the fall of 2019. It is named after the "Beloved Fruit of Tochigi." The flesh are large, with low acidity and a pronounced sweetness that makes you want to eat a lot of them. When you taste them while strawberry picking, you can enjoy the fresh sweetness of freshly picked strawberries. Also, if you cut a Tochiaica vertically, the cross section looks like a heart. This is a good photo opportunity!

The editorial department of *and trip. covered the story about strawberry picking farms!

The editorial department of *and trip. visited four strawberry picking farms in Tochigi Prefecture. We actually experienced strawberry picking and also checked out cafes and souvenir information. In this article, we introduce the four strawberry picking farms in detail.

Farms visited by the editorial staff of *and trip.

● Deainomori Strawberry Park (Kanuma City)
● Nikko Strawberry Park (Nikko City)
● Okashinoshiro Nasu Heartland "Ichigo no Mori" (Nasu Town)
● Itigo no Sato Farm (Oyama City)

Kanuma City: Deainomori Strawberry Park

At "Deainomori Strawberry Park" surrounded by nature in Kanuma City, you can enjoy the luxury of tasting freshly picked strawberries in a relaxed atmosphere on the terrace. The repetition of picking as many as possible, sitting down, and eating them while relaxing will fill your heart with satisfaction. In addition, special tools are provided to easily remove the stems without getting your hands dirty, so you can eat them in comfort. There is also a unique "Strawberry Shrine" in the garden, perfect for commemorating your trip and for posting on social media♪
After picking strawberries, enjoy them on the terrace.

Features of Deainomori Strawberry Park

Deainomori Strawberry Park is an innovative strawberry farm with movable bench cultivation. In this movable bench cultivation house, strawberry planters can be moved up and down by the staff, so that anyone can enjoy strawberry picking comfortably without having to squat on the ground. In addition, the houses and restrooms are barrier-free, so wheelchair and baby carriage users can also enjoy picking strawberries with ease.

Visitors can enjoy 45 minutes of all-you-can-eat strawberry picking of three varieties: Tochiaika, Tochiotome, and Skyberry.
Movable bench cultivation makes it easy to pick strawberries!

Comments from the editorial staff of *and trip.

Deainomori Strawberry Park  has two stores, the "Main Store" and "Berry-chan House," and the editorial department of *and trip. visited the Main Store this time.
Deainomori Strawberry Park is a charming farm where you can pick strawberries in a special pack and enjoy them at your leisure on the terrace. Picking strawberries while standing up is surprisingly tiring, but it is nice to be able to sit down on the terrace and relax while chatting with family and friends. The farm staff said, "We hope you will spend a relaxing time here." Also, the special tool to remove stawberry stems is very convenient! It takes some skill to use it at first, but once you get used to it, it is easy to remove the stawberry stem, so you can enjoy all the strawberries you can get your hands on.

There are two main methods of strawberry cultivation: "soil cultivation," in which rows are made in the field and strawberries are cultivated, and "raised cultivation," in which planters are suspended about 1 meter high and strawberries are cultivated. At Deainomori Strawberry Park, the staff told us that strawberries are mainly grown by soil cultivation, and that they grow by absorbing nutrients from the rich soil. Condensed milk is available for an extra charge, but first try tasting the sweetness of the strawberries without any condensed milk. The 45-minute strawberry picking experience will fly by in no time.

We highly recommend this farm to those who are looking for a strawberry picking experience that can be enjoyed by all three generations, from small children to grandparents.

Strawberry Shrine is a must-see!

After enjoying strawberry picking, be sure to visit Strawberry Shrine located next to the greenhouses. This shrine was built in 2023 after Kanuma City, where Deainomori Strawberry Park is located, declared itself "Strawberry City" in 2016, and as the name suggests, it is all about strawberries. Strawberry motifs are scattered everywhere, including the torii gate and ema (votive picture tablet), and there is even a large strawberry symbol in the shrine pavilion. It is wonderful to visit the shrine while feeling the "Ichigo Ichie" (Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity).
Pray at "Strawberry Shrine". A large strawberry symbol sits in the shrine pavilion.

Nikko City: Nikko Strawberry Park

Imaichi in Nikko city, where Nikko Strawberry Park is located, is a healing area surrounded by nature at the foot of the mountain. Cool in summer and much cooler in winter, it is a place where people can enjoy the changing seasons. The clean air, pure water flowing from the mountains, and the harsh cold of winter give the strawberries a special sweetness and just the right amount of acidity. Furthermore, the strawberries are carefully cultivated with reduced use of pesticides, mainly using organic fertilizers instead of chemical fertilizers, so they can be enjoyed with peace of mind.

Features of Nikko Strawberry Park

Nikko Strawberry Park offers a 30-minute all-you-can-eat course and a premium 60-minute all-you-can-eat course. 30-minute all-you-can-eat course does not originally include condensed milk, but here is some useful information. The 30-minute all-you-can-eat course does not originally include condensed milk, but here's some good news: if you use coupon on the official website, condensed milk is included! For details, please visit the official website. On the other hand, the premium 60-minute all-you-can-eat course comes with condensed milk and chocolate sauce, with the added bonus of free refills of condensed milk. You will be guided to the best strawberry house of the day from among Tochiaika, Skyberry, Tochiotome, and Benihoppe.

Comments from the editorial staff of *and trip.

You can enjoy picking strawberries with J-Pop music playing in the background, which will naturally lift your spirits.

The cultivation method is basically raised cultivation, which allows visitors to pick strawberries without having to stoop down. On the other hand, they also have soil cultivation and are particular about organic cultivation methods. The staff will guide you to the most delicious spot of the day, so you will wait until the day of your visit to see which variety you will encounter. The shelves of the raised cultivation are designed to be about 115 cm wide, making it easy for strollers and wheelchairs to pass through.

This time, we experienced the premium 60-minute all-you-can-eat course. The strawberries we picked were sweet enough as they were, but we also had the luxury of dipping them in condensed milk or chocolate sauce to change their flavor and enjoy them to our heart's content.

Nasu Town: Okashinoshiro Nasu Heartland "Ichigo no Mori"

Okashinoshiro Nasu Heartland "Ichigo no Mori" is located on the grounds of Nasu Heartland, a popular tourist attraction in Nasu town. This location is a must-see for sweets lovers, who can enjoy strawberry picking and the world of sweets at the same time. Okashinoshiro Nasu Heartland "Ichigo no Mori" strawberries are thick-fleshed and bright red, grown with delicious water from Mt. Nasu and soft sunlight.
There are many strawberry greenhouses for Tochiaika and Tochiotome cultivation on the premises!

Features of Okashinoshiro Nasu Heartland "Ichigo no Mori"

The varieties of strawberries available for picking at Okashinoshiro Nasu Heartland "Ichigo no Mori" are Tochiaika and Tochiotome. You can enjoy your choice of either of these two varieties for 30 minutes of all-you-can-eat.

At Okashinoshiro Nasu Heartland
"Ichigo no Mori", the picking method differs depending on the variety. Tochiaika is grown in soil cultivation, so visitors squat down to pick them. Soil cultivation lets you enjoy the scent of the earth and  a more authentic, hands-on experience. On the other hand, Tochiotome is grown on a raised cultivation, so you can pick them while standing. You do not have to bend over and can enjoy them in a comfortable position.

Comments from the editorial staff of *and trip.

A feature of strawberry picking at Okashinoshiro Nasu Heartland "Ichigo no Mori" is the style of picking by cutting with scissors. These scissors were very convenient! Even children who have difficulty picking strawberries by pulling them can pick them by themselves without difficulty if they can use scissors. Moreover, if you cut the stem with scissors, you can eat them from the stem side of a strawberry, which is recommended by the president of the farm, and enjoy them smartly and deliciously. Furthermore, it is wonderful that this picking method is gentle to delicate seedlings because it does not pull the strawberry stems!

Enjoy shopping at Okashinoshiro Nasu Heartland!

On the same site as  "Ichigo no Mori" is the "Okashinoshiro Nasu Heartland". As the name suggests, Okashinoshiro Nasu Heartland is truly a sweets theme park that manufactures and sells delicious confections! In addition to confectionery shopping, the facility also has a confectionery factory. Visitors can watch through glass windows as the confections are carefully made by confectioners.

Here are top 3 sweets that are particularly popular as souvenirs. The first is "Goyoutei-no-Tsuki". This is the store's most popular sweet, a fluffy sponge cake filled with thick custard. A seasonal product using the farm's strawberries (Tochiotome) is also available. The second is "Cheesecake” which is very rich and moist. The smooth melt-in-your-mouth texture is irresistible. The third is "Goyoutei-no-Hana". These cute strawberry-flavored cookies are made from the farm's strawberries. When you visit the Okashinoshiro Nasu Heartland, be sure to check out the sweets souvenirs.

Comments from the editorial staff of *and trip.

Itigo no Sato Farm is a large-scale strawberry farm with more than 180 greenhouses. About 100 of the greenhouses are cultivated on a raised platform, and about 80 are cultivated in the soil, which is incredible scale. After receiving a paper cup at the reception desk and listening to an explanation, a staff member will guide you to the greenhouses. Strawberry picking Deluxe, available only on Saturdays and Sundays, is very popular and reservations are flooding in! It is really rare to be able to eat all-you-can-eat a total of five varieties: Tochiaika, Skyberry, Tochiotome, Tochihime, and Milky Berry, so be sure to check it out.

What is surprising is that all the strawberries served in the facility are strawberries picked in the farm! Knowing that the strawberries and sweets can only be tasted here makes it even more special.

In addition to gourmet foods, Itigo no Sato Farm also has an "Doubutsu-Hiroba (animal square)" where you can interact with cute animals for free! Donkeys, alpacas, and other animals are very popular with children.

Points to enjoy strawberry picking more

To enjoy strawberry picking even more, a few tips will enhance your experience. Here are some points recommended by the editorial department of *and trip.!
Early morning is the best time to make a reservation: It is recommended to make a reservation first thing in the morning when there are lots of berries.
Wear clothes that are comfortable to move in and that you can get dirty: You may have to squat down in the soil to pick, so pants and sneakers are recommended.
Remember the trick to picking: You can pick the fruits more neatly by gently twisting the stem toward you. The key is not to use too much force.
Enjoy the flavor in the order in which you eat them: If you eat them from the stem side of strawberry, the more concentrated and sweeter they become as you move toward the end.
Check out photogenic spots: Some farms have a variety of photo spots and café sweets.
