Sakae Shokudo on Tarajiru Highway
National Route 8 runs along the Miyazaki Coast (also known as the Jade Coast) about an hour's drive from Toyama Prefecture. Here, you will find a lineup of restaurants with "Tara-jiru" signboards. This road is also known as "Tara-jiru Road. The reason why "Tara-jiru" is called "Tara-jiru" here is because it was originally a dish made to warmly welcome fishermen returning from fishing by their wives who were waiting for them on the beach.

I was curious to visit such a tara-jiru street because it was aired on a certain variety show in which Kenmin Star introduced the characteristics of the prefecture, its food, and its people. The restaurant is Sakae Shokudo, which was introduced on TV. Many large trucks were lined up in the parking lot, and inside the restaurant, people who looked like regular drivers were eating in a familiar manner.

I ordered three servings of cod roe soup, which was placed in a large, old-fashioned pot with codfish in it, and placed in the center of the table. All that was left was rice and pickles. The miso soup was gentle, with all the flavor of the fish melting into the pot. In addition, the many green onions added to the soup made the flavor more intense, and the taste was indescribably delicious! In no time at all, the pot was empty! I was worried about whether I would be able to finish my bowl of rice, but I was able to eat it without leaving any leftovers.

Asahimachi is a town that is not often visited on vacation. In fact, it is not that far from Toyama City, so it is worth a visit just for the sake of eating this local specialty, "tara-jiru" (cod roe soup). We hope you will try this local dish that is well-loved by the locals.
