Gion Kashiwazaki Festival "Great Fireworks Festival of the Sea", one of the three major fireworks in Echigo

Fireworks season is coming!

Saturday, July 26, 2025! The Gion Kashiwazaki Festival "Great Fireworks Festival of the Sea", one of the three major fireworks displays in Echigo, will be held!

The "Starmine in the Sky under the Sea," which curves toward the sea and forms a beautiful semicircle as it blooms on the surface of the sea, and the "Three-Shaku Dama Extra-Large Fireworks," in which a three-shaku dama weighing approximately 200 kg blooms a huge ring with a diameter of 600 meters above the sea, all in a jet black space with the sea breeze of the Sea of Japan in the air. Enjoy the roar and light of approximately 16,000 fireworks that will be shot off over a period of 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Here are this year's main attractions

The "100 Shaku Dama (100 Shaku Balls) Simultaneous Launch" is an extravaganza of 100 fireworks with a blooming diameter of 300 meters, all shooting off at the same time across a width of 1,500 meters. Please come and see the spectacular screen that spreads out in an instant with a roaring sound!

What is Underwater Fireworks?

Kashiwazaki's most famous fireworks are the underwater fireworks that bloom on the surface of the sea!

In fact, the gunpowder used in fireworks does not burn, but explodes in a chemical reaction. This combustion phenomenon occurs when chemicals containing oxygen combine with carbon. The chemical reaction keeps the fire from being extinguished even when thrown into the ocean! Fireworks that are launched into the ocean sink into the water and then float to the surface due to the air contained in the fireworks. The time from the time of launch is adjusted so that the fireworks open when they float to the surface of the sea.

Basically, there is no difference between fireworks shot into the sea and those shot into the night sky. Also, fireworks are made of paper, charcoal, glue (nori) and salt, so there is no problem with the natural environment.

The fireworks of Lake Suwa are often compared to the underwater fireworks of Kashiwazaki. The fireworks at Suwa Lake are set up on poles from the bottom of the lake, so when they open, they form a perfect semicircle.

In the case of Kashiwazaki, they open in the water, so the resistance of the water makes them look like lotus flowers!
