On Wednesday, July 2, 2025, we will hold a town walking event in Zougeta, NIKAHO CITY! Zogata is a place where history and nature come alive. Why don't you join JR East Travel Service Center Akita staff for a leisurely stroll through this area, where Matsuo Basho also walked, and experience the history of the area and its hidden places of interest?

Outline of the city tour

The tour will be held on July 2, 2025 (Wed.) from 10:40 to 15:45 (meeting time 10:30)
[Meeting place] In front of the ticket gate of JR Zogata Station
[Participation fee] 3,000 yen (cash only) *Payment in advance is required by the day before the tour. Please visit JR East Travel Service Center Akita for advance payment. If advance payment is difficult, you may pay on-site on the day of the event. Please make sure to bring enough change.

Here are some highlights of the course recommended by JR East Travel Service Center Akita staff!

Zougeta Local History Museum

At the Zogata Local History Museum, there are exhibits on the history and origins of Zogata, the eruption of Chokaisan (collapse of Mt. Chokaisan), and works by Shuzo Ikeda, a woodblock print artist from Zogata. In addition, there are exhibits on literary figures who visited Zogata, including Matsuo Basho.

Kujukushima Island

After visiting the Zogata Local History Museum, visitors can walk around the town of Zogata with a guide from the Chokaisan-Tobishima Geopark. One of the best places to visit is Kujuku Islands!

The islands were once called "Matsushima in the east and Zogata in the west" along with Matsushima, one of the three most scenic spots in Japan, and were visited by Matsuo Basho as the northernmost destination in his "Okunohosomichi" (The Road to the Deep North). The islands are dotted with rice paddies and have been designated as a national natural monument.

Zoukata Temple

Near Kujuku Islands is a temple called "Scapharaphiman-ji Temple. The temple is also home to a monument to the haiku poet Basho, a gateway built in the mid-Edo period, a stone where Shinran, founder of the Jodo Shinshu sect of Buddhism, is said to have sat on, and the Seven Wonders of Scaphiman-ji Temple. The temple is also noted as a "cat temple," where cats can be seen chasing each other around the spacious temple grounds or basking in the sun when the weather is nice. You can also get a red seal to commemorate your visit!

Roadside Station Zogata "Nemu no Oka

After stopping at Scaphariman-ji Temple, head to Nemu-no-oka, one of the largest roadside stations in the Tohoku region, for some free time! Nemu-no-oka" has a hot spring with a panoramic view of the Sea of Japan, in addition to a product shop and restaurant. Next to Nemu no Oka is the Nika Hotto tourist center, where you can purchase local products and enjoy a footbath. Perhaps you will be able to find "iwagaki" (rock oysters), which are in season!
