Yoro Gorge is a valley formed by the Yoro River, which flows from the Asabara district of Ichihara City to the Awamata district of Ootaki Town, Isumi County. This place of abundant nature has its own charm in each of the four seasons, making it a popular destination for many visitors. In this issue, we will introduce the summer attractions of Yoro Gorge. How about a summer excursion to Yoro Gorge, where you can feel coolness in the midst of nature?

The Yoro Valley is well-known for this! Awamata Falls

From Goi Station on the JR Uchibo Line, transfer to the Kominato Railway and arrive at Yoro Gorge Station in about one hour. From Yoro Gorge Station, take the Kominato Bus to Awamata Falls, and after a 10-minute bus ride, you will arrive at the Awamata Falls stop, where you will find the Awamata Falls entrance right next to the bus stop. There is a slope leading up to the waterfall, but let's continue onward toward the waterfall!

Nature because it's summer

The day of the interview was blessed with fine weather and summer-like sunshine. Even so, the path to the waterfall was covered with fresh greenery, and the shade of the trees and the breeze blowing from the direction of the waterfall made it pleasantly cool. The sound of the waterfall became closer as our steps advanced, and after descending a slope and stairs, Awamata Falls finally appeared.

Take a leisurely stroll around Awamata Falls

The constant flow of water is a powerful sight! The area around Awamata Falls is also a promenade where visitors can take a walk. Looking at the surface of the water glistening through the trees, we were able to spot small fish, partly because the water was so clean. Take your time and enjoy nature while gazing at the cool river.

The trail that runs from Awamata Falls to Ozawamata Falls is partially closed due to Typhoon No. 13 that hit the area in 2023. For the latest information, please check the official website of Otaki Town.

Gelato is recommended after a cool drink at the waterfall [Yamazato Gelateria Yamaneko].

After being healed by nature, we recommend returning to the direction of the stop and having a cool gelato to cool off. The path that was downhill on the way to the waterfall is naturally uphill on the way back. If you return breathlessly to the original stop, you will find "Yamazato Gelateria Yamaneko," a white building with an impressive cat symbol.

Wildcat's gelato made with carefully selected ingredients

Here, visitors can enjoy gelato and soft-serve ice cream made with carefully selected ingredients, as well as shaved ice if they make a reservation in advance. Among them, we recommend the gelato, which allows you to enjoy flavors made from ingredients produced in Chiba Prefecture! If you order a double, you can choose two flavors from the "Flavor of the Day," but they are all so appealing that it is hard to choose between the two. Flavors vary depending on the season, so you can also look forward to seeing which flavors are available when you visit.
This time, we ordered "Chiba Milking Yogurt" and "Kamogawa City Lemon Milk

Let's try Wildcat's gelato!

Purchased gelato and soft-serve ice cream can be eaten inside Wildcat. Both the first and second floors have a great location with a view of the river and nature leading from Awamata Falls! Pets are welcome to enter the store by asking the staff.
The Chiba Milking Yogurt I ordered this time tasted like a refreshing yogurt, but also smooth. The Kamogawa City pesticide-free lemon miruku was mixed with lemon peel and had an impressive fresh lemon flavor.
After eating the gelato, visitors can enjoy Awamata Falls from a different perspective by exiting the Yamaneko and taking the path to the right. Please note that the path here is also hilly! The waterfall seen from upstream is also powerful, and the powerful flow of water is a must-see.

After enjoying the power of the waterfall, enjoy the murmuring of the Yoro River!

After a 30-minute walk from Awamata Falls, walk behind Suigetsuji Temple and you will come to the entrance of the Omoshirokyo Trail. As you walk downhill under the shade of trees, a 1-kilometer-long promenade is built along the river from the opposite bank across the stepping stones. Unlike Awamata Falls, where you could hear the powerful sound of the waterfall, this is a place where you can quietly enjoy the murmuring of the river. Enjoy the coolness of nature with the flow of water and the murmuring of the river.

The Omoshikyo Trail may be closed due to weather conditions. Please check the official website of Otaki Town for the latest information.

The two-story tunnel is one of the most photogenic in Yoro Gorge!

The river and waterfalls are not the only places to feel cool in Yoro Gorge. A short distance away from the waterfalls, along the prefectural road, is the Mukaiyama-Kyoei Tunnel, a mysterious tunnel with two exits. This is a mysterious tunnel with two exits. It is known as a double-decker tunnel because the two exits are located at the top and bottom of the tunnel.
Once inside, there is no light and a cold wind blows, making you forget how hot it is outside. From the exit on the second floor, one can see the lights outside, creating a mysterious space.
The Mukaiyama-Kyoei Tunnel is used as a roadway. Please be careful of traffic when passing through.

A 10-minute walk from the Mukaiyama-Kyoei Tunnel leads to Kannon Bridge, which features a double-tiered drum bridge. Kannon Bridge leads from the road along the national highway to Yoro Mountain Rikkok-ji Temple and is the symbol of Yoro Valley. In summer, the vermilion bridge stands out against the surrounding lush greenery, and in autumn, the bridge offers a beautiful view of the colored leaves and the bridge.
