Taiheizan Hydrangea Slope
The "Taiheizan Tochigi Hydrangea Festival", an early summer festival in Tochigi City, Tochigi Prefecture, will be held again this year from June 13, 2025 (Fri.) to June 29, 2025 (Sun.)! About 2,500 Western hydrangeas, forehead hydrangeas, and mountain hydrangeas will be in full bloom on both sides of "Ajisai-zaka," a 1,000-step stone staircase leading to the front entrance of Taiheizan Shrine, attracting visitors.

Taiheizan Shrine and a tour of nearby historical and power spots

Taiheizan Shrine is a historic shrine with a history of more than 2,000 years, where many deities are enshrined, including Amaterasu (the Sun Goddess). The shrine grounds are dotted with shrines that offer various benefits such as traffic safety, prosperous business, academic achievement, and match-making, and are crowded with worshippers. The shrine is also noted as a power spot for its stroking stones and stone snake shrine. During the Taiheizan Tochigi Hydrangea Festival, the mysterious atmosphere of the Taiheizan Shrine and the beauty of the hydrangeas combine to make this one of the most popular spots to visit.

The best time to see Taiheizan hydrangeas is from late June to early July!

The best time to view the Taiheizan hydrangeas is usually from late June to early July. During the best time to see the hydrangeas, both sides of "Ajisai-zaka (Hydrangea Hill)," characterized by approximately 1,000 stone steps leading to the Taiheizan Shrine, are covered with hydrangeas in various colors, such as light blue and purple, and combined with the historical atmosphere of the stone steps, you can enjoy a fantastic view. The stone steps are called "nozara-zukuri" (stone staircase). The stone steps are built using the traditional method of "nozurazumi-zukuri" (stone stacking), which is one of the attractions of this area, allowing visitors to experience both history and natural beauty at the same time.

Spectacular views from the top of the mountain and how to enjoy each season

From the top of Mt. Taiheizan, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Kanto Plain. On a clear day, you can even see the Tokyo Sky Tree and Mt. One of the major attractions of Mt. Taiheizan is that visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature in each of the four seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, hydrangeas in early summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snowy scenery in winter. The night view of Mt. Taiheizan has also been selected as a "Japan Night View Heritage" and is recommended as a date spot.
