The days of cold temperatures continue to vary widely, but we are all looking forward to the arrival of a warm spring. We can now hear the news of spring and the blooming of "sakura" (cherry blossoms). In this issue, we will introduce some of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in the Shinetsu area of Nagano and Niigata prefectures, as well as some of the more obscure spots. Takato Joshi Park, Ina City, Nagano: About 1,500 Takato's native species, Takato kohiganzakura (cherry trees), are in full bloom.

One of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in Nagano is Takato Joshi Park in Ina. The park is one of the three most famous cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan, following Hirosaki Park in Aomori Prefecture and Yoshinoyama in Nara Prefecture, and is home to approximately 1,500 Takato's native Takato cherry trees.

The "Takato Joshi Park Cherry Blossom Festival" is held every year from early to mid-April, when the cherry trees are in full bloom, and includes stalls and entertainment events. There will be many events to make the cherry blossom viewing even more exciting, such as a photo spot set up only during this season and a parade of "Takato-bayashi," an intangible cultural heritage of Ina City.

Ueda Castle, Ueda City, Nagano: About 1,000 cherry trees blooming as if covering the castle.

Do you know about the Ueda Castle Thousand Cherry Blossoms Festival, a representative spring event in Nagano Prefecture? At the Ueda Castle Thousand Cherry Blossoms Festival, visitors can enjoy the 400-year-old Ueda Castle as well as approximately 1,000 cherry trees such as Someiyoshino and Shidare-zakura (weeping cherry) that cover the castle in full bloom. During the Senbonzakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival), a product exhibition featuring local gourmet foods and specialties will be held, and the festival will be illuminated at night, making it an event that can be enjoyed all day long.

Ancient cherry trees in Uki, Yamanouchi Town, Nagano Prefecture: Famous trees and old trees that are several hundred years old can be seen.

In the Uki district, about a 15-minute drive from the Sukagawa district, famous and old trees called "Uki's ancient cherry trees," which are several hundred years old, announce the arrival of spring with their pale white and pink colors. Among them, the Edohigan-zakura (Chitose-zakura) cherry tree is registered as a natural monument designated by the prefecture.
The best time to view the cherry blossoms is from early to mid-April every year, and the "Uki Ancient Cherry Blossom Festival" is held at the same time.

Takada Joshi Park in Joetsu City, Niigata: One of the three best nighttime cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan! Cherry blossom viewing party with about 4,000 cherry trees in bloom.

Takada Castle's three-story turret and cherry blossoms in Takada Joshi Park are illuminated by approximately 3,000 paper lanterns, and their reflection on the water surface of the moat is a fantastic sight. Takada Joshi Park is one of the three best places in Japan to view cherry blossoms at night, along with Ueno Onshi Park and Hirosaki Castle Park.

A cherry blossom viewing party is held when the approximately 4,000 cherry trees are in bloom! This year marks the 100th cherry blossom viewing party, and various events will be held to celebrate this milestone.

Yahiko, Nishikanbara-gun, Niigata: From Somei-Yoshino cherry blossoms in April to double-flowered cherry blossoms in early May

Yahiko is located in Nishikanbara County, Niigata Prefecture, and is famous for Yahiko Shrine, the first shrine in Echigo, which many people worship under the nickname "Oyahiko-sama," and Yahiko Park, which is famous for its autumn foliage and Momiji Valley. Yahiko Park is also known for its cherry blossoms, which can be enjoyed in all four seasons.

In spring, cherry trees bloom everywhere within walking distance from Yahiko Station, including in front of Yahiko Station, Yahiko Park, and Yahiko Shrine Cherry Blossom Garden, and the flowering period is long, from Somei Yoshino in April to Yaezakura in early May.

Niigata City, Niigata】3 cherry blossom viewing spots in Niigata City: Shinanogawa Yasuragi Tsutsumi-Ryokuchi, Hakusan Shrine and Hakusan Park, and Toriyano Lagoon.

There are several places famous for cherry blossoms in Niigata City, the center of Niigata Prefecture. We will introduce three of them: "Shinanogawa Yasuragi-tsutsumi Ryokuchi", easily accessible by bus from Niigata Station; "Hakusan Shrine and Hakusan Park", crowded with spring festival and cherry blossoms; and "Toriyanogata", where cherry trees around a lake are in full bloom.

Hakusan Shrine, Hakusan Park

Hakusan Shrine is located in the center of Niigata City and has a history of more than 1,000 years as the guardian deity of Niigata.
The "Hakusan-sama Spring Festival" held from April 12 to 18 attracts many worshippers and cherry blossom viewers as it coincides with the blooming of the cherry trees. The area from Hakusan Shrine to Hakusan Park, including the area around Kenmin Kaikan and Ryutopia, and Yasuragi Tsutsumi is known as one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in Niigata City, and the cherry blossoms in full bloom are breathtakingly beautiful.

Toriyano Lagoon

TOYANO LAGO is a lake located about 2 km from JR Niigata Station. The prefectural park stretches along the Toryano Lagoon and consists of three areas (Onaike District, Kanegi District, and Sports Park).

The Meike area, where the Niigata Prefectural Library and the Nature Science Museum are located, and the Kanegi area, where the Niigata City Industrial Promotion Center is located, are ideal for cherry blossom viewing, as many Someiyoshino cherry trees are planted there. Approximately 2,000 cherry trees will be in full bloom around the Toryano Lagoon, and bonbori (paper lanterns) will be lit on the cherry trees around Benten Bridge. There are also restaurants along the lakeside where visitors can enjoy viewing cherry blossoms while dining.
