Wakuya Castle Ruins Cherry Blossom

Shiroyama Park (Wakuya Castle Ruin) is one of the most famous cherry blossom viewing spots in Wakuya Town, Miyagi Prefecture.

In Shiroyama Park, the ruins of Wakuya Castle, about 500 cherry trees bloom, including Someiyoshino (Somei Yoshino), weeping cherry, mountain cherry, and Taizanfukun (a type of sato cherry), and the entire park is beautifully decorated with light red flowers in spring.
In addition to Shiroyama Park, there is a magnificent 120-year-old weeping cherry tree near the stone steps leading up to the castle, and a row of 80-year-old Someiyoshino cherry trees on the left bank of the Eagogawa River that cover the road.
During the cherry blossom festival, the cherry trees are lit up at night to create a fantastic night view, making the area a popular cherry blossom viewing spot in northern Miyagi Prefecture that attracts many visitors day and night.

When will the 2025 Wakuya Cherry Blossom Festival begin? Where?

The Wakuya Cherry Blossom Festival will be held from April 1 to April 29, 2025 at Wakuya Castle Site Shiroyama Park in Wakuya-cho, Toda-gun, Miyagi Prefecture. During the festival, various events such as the lighting up of the cherry blossoms at night and the 75th Tohoku Cart Horse Riding Competition will be held.

Here are the highlights! The 75th Tohoku Cart Horse Racing Competition

Horses have long had a close relationship with people and played a particularly important role as a means of transportation in Wakuya Town, which was a commercial and distribution center. However, with the passage of time, there are now few opportunities to see them.
Under such circumstances, the "cart horse" competition is held for the purpose of competing in the strength of white horses. The contestants pull sleds carrying different loads for different classes, and compete in the time required to cross two obstacles on a 120-meter straight course. Under the cherry blossoms in full bloom, the crowd cheers on the horses as they compete in a heated battle. In particular, the moment when the horses and riders cross the obstacles in unison, the crowd cheers and applauds loudly.
The competition is held on the third Sunday of April every year on the banks of the Eagogawa River in Shiroyama Park as the main event of the Cherry Blossom Festival.
