Takine Goten, the largest hall
Abukuma-do Cave is located in Tamura City, Fukushima Prefecture. Known as one of the most famous limestone caves in Japan, it is home to a variety of stalactites, and the average temperature inside the cave is a stable 15°C throughout the year. Here we introduce basic information on Abukuma-do, such as access and admission fees, as well as highlights, exploration courses that will make you feel like an adventurer, and other ways to enjoy the cave.

What is "Abukuma-do Cave"?

Abukuma-do Cave, which was created over a long period of time, is approximately 4,218 meters long with an open section of approximately 600 meters. The average temperature is stable at 15°C throughout the year, making it cool in summer and warm enough to fog up your glasses in winter.

The stalactites in the cave are formed into various shapes by the erosive action of the groundwater that drips down from the cave. Each stalactite is named after its shape, such as "Christmas Tree" or "Monster Tower. The "Moon World," the first cave in Japan to be equipped with a dimming system for stage production, is also a must-see attraction.

General Course and Exploration Course

Abukuma-do has both a general course and an exploration course. The general course has only a few steps to climb and descend, and there are few ups and downs. The total distance is 600 meters and the time required is about 40 minutes.

The Exploration Course is an optional course that offers a more adventurous experience than the General Course, and requires about 10 minutes to walk a distance of 120 meters, crouching down between narrow stalactites and crossing log ladders and stepping stones. The course splits off in the middle of the general course and meets up again at Takine Goten. When visiting Abukuma-do Cave, it is recommended to join the "Exploration Course" to further experience its attractions!

Although you will not go into the water on these courses, there are areas with low ceilings and poor footing, and the floors and walls may be wet and slippery. Please wear comfortable shoes that can get wet and enjoy exploring the caves. Also, please note that skirts, high-heeled shoes, flip-flops, and other types of sandals that can easily come off will not be allowed in the cave. Small children are not a problem as long as they can walk by themselves to the end of the tour, but please note that you will not be able to carry them on your back or in your arms from the middle of the tour.
