Shibuya, like the name of the place, is a town at the bottom of a valley. Shibuya is filled with slopes such as Dogenzaka, Miyamasuzaka, and Spainzaka. Most of the slopes radiate out from Shibuya Station, so it is said that if you go down the slopes, you will eventually end up at Shibuya Station. Have you ever heard of Sakura-zaka, one of the many "hills" in Shibuya? Sakura-zaka is a 5-minute walk from Shibuya Station, with a slope of about 20 degrees, and in spring, a beautiful "cherry blossom tunnel" appears!

Sakura-zaka Cherry Blossom-lined Sakura-zaka now and then

Sakura-zaka is located in Sakuragaoka-cho, Shibuya, and even the address is decorated with "cherry blossoms." Sakuragaoka was once known as "Kaieda-yama" (Mt. Kaieda), and it is said that the current name of the area originated when Captain Kaieda of the Satsuma Army planted cherry trees during the Meiji Restoration. However, the cherry trees were cut down after the war and replaced by rows of willow trees. The current row of cherry trees was planted in 1991. Since then, the road has been improved, making it possible to enjoy the cherry blossoms while walking slowly. 23 cherry trees spread their branches toward the roadway in the center for about 200 meters, creating a tunnel of cherry blossoms! There is also a 13-meter difference in height between the top and bottom of Sakura-zaka, so you can enjoy different views depending on your vantage point. The high-rise buildings around Shibuya Station can be glimpsed through the cherry blossoms, which is also a unique sight in Shibuya.

How to get to Sakura-zaka?

It is better to go to Sakura-zaka from the New South Exit of JR Shibuya Station (the nearest ticket gate is the New South ticket gate on the 3rd floor) via the Sakura Stage building. It is about a 5-minute walk. Please note that JR Shibuya Station is currently undergoing station improvement work.

When is the best time to visit? Is there any lighting up?

The cherry trees on Sakura-zaka are Someiyoshino. The best time to view them is usually from late March to early April. It may be earlier or later depending on weather conditions. In addition to the pink cherry blossoms during the daytime, nighttime viewing is also recommended. The illuminated nighttime cherry blossoms can be enjoyed with a fantastic view that is different from that of the daytime. This year's lighting will run from Friday, March 27 to Sunday, April 5, 2026. Also spectacular is the lighting of 250 tiered lanterns that will be displayed at the Shibuya Sakura Stage Sakuragaoka Plaza, which can only be experienced at this time of the year. This event will be held from Monday, March 23 to Sunday, April 5.
