Craft Beer at VERTERE
Have you ever been to Okutama? It takes about one and a half hours by train from the center of Tokyo. Although located in Tokyo, the Okutama area offers a rich variety of nature and activities. In summer, you can go mountain stream rafting or hiking, and in autumn, you can enjoy the brilliant autumn leaves. In this issue, we would like to introduce VERTERE, a craft beer brewery located in the nature-rich Okutama area.

The Beginning of VERTERE

VERTERE is a microbrewery established in 2014 and located in Okutama, Tokyo. We are pleased to introduce VERTERE, a new brewery that quadrupled its brewing capacity in February 2024 in order to deliver beer to more people. The rich nature of Okutama, with its abundant greenery, clean air, and clean water, is the perfect place for beer brewing. The theme of VERTERE's beer brewing is "how and where to drink with whom. We aim to create craft beer that tastes better in more pleasant places and situations.

Brewery tours are also available.

VERTERE" means "to change" in Latin, and as the name suggests, VERTERE's characteristic is to brew beer freely without being bound by fixed concepts. When I entered the brewery, it was cool inside. Inside the brewery, in addition to explanations about ingredients such as "malt, hops, and yeast" and the concept of beer brewing, we were given explanations about the actual brewing and fermentation tanks, and the canning machine used to fill cans with the finished beer. We felt that the beer tasted even better when we learned about the process of making beer and the thoughts of the brewers.

Craft beer with a lot of attention to detail

After the brewery tour, we headed to a store that sells craft beer, where we found more craft beer on sale than we had ever imagined. There were more than 30 varieties! The wide range of beers on tap included classics such as IPAs and saisons, as well as experimental styles such as a sour ale made with fruit. Like the brewery, the cans are white in color and printed with pictures of each flavor, making these craft beers visually pleasing.

Of the many beers available, we purchased three that we were interested in...and all of them are full of attention to detail.
The beer on the left is Baldwinii. Its ingredients are coffee, cacao, and vanilla beans, and it has a rich mouthfeel and brownie-like flavor. The beer in the middle is Eugenia. It has aromas and flavors of figs, dried fruits, muskmelon, and hubble gum, and is made exclusively with New Zealand hops. Finally, the beer on the far right, Casimiroa, has aromas and flavors of peach, grape, pineapple, and citrus, with a rich mouthfeel and a hop flavor that bursts in your mouth. There are so many other varieties that you might get lost in the crowd, but you can find your favorite drink to suit your taste.

While looking carefully at the showcase, I found a sign that read, "Sold only in the Nishitama area! This beer is "Coffea. This beer is made from Brazilian coffee beans roasted by Gotta Coffee on the second floor of Okutama Station, and has a smooth texture and rich aroma. The can is also a chic black color, reminiscent of coffee beans, and we were impressed by the attention to detail.
Available only in the Nishitama area
