  • Fukui
  • Stay
Hello, this is the Hokuriku editorial department! This is the Hokuriku editorial department! This time I would like to write a stay report on "Mikuni Ocean Resort & Hotel" located in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture!

Welcome drink

After arriving and checking in, we sat down in the lobby for a short rest. The welcome drink includes not only soft drinks, but also alcohol such as beer, highball, chuhai, and sparkling wine! The welcome drink in the lobby is available for 24 hours for soft drinks and until 6 pm for alcohol. In addition to drinks, there are also small snacks, which is appreciated in the evening when you are hungry...! On this day, there were fukashi imo (sweet potatoes), pretzels, haniage mochi (rice cakes), and ice cream.
But be careful not to eat too much here, as you will be out of your element at the buffet!

Mikuni Ocean Buffet

Now, let's see...! The thing I was looking forward to the most when I stayed at the hotel was the Mikuni Ocean Buffet! The menu changes according to the season. (The Hokuriku editorial staff stayed on January 27, 2025.) When you enter the buffet hall, just go around in a circle. The menu is so extensive that you will not be able to eat everything, so you will have to strategize.

This is a must-try! Sashimi

If you come to Mikuni, you must eat a full meal of sashimi! The items of the day were yellowtail, sea bream, and sweet shrimp! Beautiful sashimi, sweet and tasty...! It's so popular that everyone takes a plate, but don't worry, it will be replenished as soon as it's gone! The buffet is open until 9:00 p.m., but even at the end of the buffet, the plates are restocked, so you can enjoy the sashimi to your heart's content.

Sushi with a wide variety of ingredients!

Sushi with seared squid
Behind the sashimi corner, there is also a sushi corner! There were about four kinds of sushi, including salmon and seared squid!

Boiled red snow crab

Crabs are so big that they are sticking out of the plate!
What a surprise! All-you-can-eat boiled red snow crab is also available! It was like a dream come true to be able to fill up on crab... ♪ There was also a full menu of other standard buffet items such as lasagna, bean-curd soup with hot sauce, tempura, french fries and fried chicken, all of which are well-known at buffets. There were also Fukui specialties such as grated buckwheat noodles and deep-fried tofu, making it hard to decide what to order.

20 kinds of Fukui brand local sake!

The buffet includes 90 minutes of all-you-can-drink alcoholic and soft drinks! The alcoholic beverages include beer and highballs, of course. Of course there are beer and highballs among the alcoholic beverages, but there are also 20 brands of Fukui's locally brewed sake available at any given time...! The details of each sake are written on a business-card sized piece of paper, so be sure to compare them!
If you put it like this, you don't have to wonder "What am I drinking now? It's better to put them like this.
There is also a map of the sake breweries in the storehouse, so it is recommended to drink sake from the places you visited today and the places you will visit tomorrow.

Miso ice cream" is a must-try!

We also enjoyed the desserts...on this day, there were four flavors: vanilla, chocolate, green tea, and miso. Miso ice cream was too good...! (By the way, you can have ice cream for breakfast too!) It was so good that I wanted to take this whole case home with me. When you visit, please try this miso ice cream!
The right side is miso ice cream, which is similar in color to vanilla ice cream.

Rare Tatami-mat Bath

There are three bathtubs in the large bathroom: "Wajimato-no-yu (indoor bath)," "Fugetsu-no-yu (outdoor bath)," and "Ryusho-no-yu (indoor bath).

The large octagonal bathtub is made of Shakudani-ishi stone from Fukui Prefecture. Even during busy times when many guests are staying at the hotel, you can soak in the bath in a relaxed manner.

The floor is made of tatami mats! The temperature of the Japanese tatami mat bath is a little lukewarm compared to the other two, so it is recommended for those who do not like hot water and children.

Enjoy after taking a bath

After a full meal and a soak in the hot spring, if you feel that it is too late to go to bed, you can have fun inside the hotel!
・Table tennis
・Karaoke
・Taiko Drum Master
・Manga book corner
All of the above are available for free. It's a long night in Mikuni!

Recharge your energy with breakfast!

Even though I ate so much yesterday that my stomach was bloated, I am properly hungry in the morning (laugh). In the morning, too, you can eat as much as you like in the buffet style! When the Hokuriku editorial staff stayed at the hotel, there was a Kaisen-don (seafood bowl) fair going on, so we were treated to another morning full of fish ♡ tuna tataki, yellowtail tataki, salmon tataki, salmon roe... You can put on as much as you like! Can I put as much as I like on it!
The ice cream was so popular that it was gone in no time, and they kept replenishing it.
My choices were Buri Tataki, Tororo (grated yam), and plenty of salmon roe...♡!

A wide variety of local cuisine

Great for the day after drinking!
There was also a wide variety of local cuisine! Saba no Heshiko Chazuke (Mackerel Heshiko Chazuke). Saba no heshiko is a fermented food made by marinating and maturing mackerel for a year. The concentrated flavor of the mackerel makes it a perfect accompaniment to rice dishes such as ochazuke and onigiri! It is also sold as a souvenir, so if you like it, please try it at home.
The buffet also featured many other local ingredients such as Ono taro and Sanrihama rakkyo (Japanese cucumber). All rooms at the Mikuni Ocean Resort & Hotel have ocean views! All rooms have a view of the Mikuni Sunset Beach, which has been selected as one of the best 100 sunsets in Japan. Why don't you go on a trip where you can taste the Sea of Japan with both your eyes and your tongue?
