The former Kukurimaru Elementary School was located in Showamura in the Okuaizu region of Fukushima Prefecture. It was nearly 40 years ago that the 80-year-old former Kukurimaru Elementary School was closed down.
Since then, the school overcame the threat of demolition several times, and with the support of many people, it was renovated and reborn in April 2018 as the village's exchange and tourism base facility "Kui Maru Ko Kui Maru Sho".
Inside the school building, which can be freely visited, is a truly nostalgic world of wooden corridors, stairs, desks, and textbooks from the 1960s that you can actually hold in your hands.

In the schoolyard, a large ginkgo tree over 120 years old towers over the school grounds, which are covered with a yellow carpet in the fall.

Also on the grounds is the Soba Café SCHOLA, where visitors can enjoy handmade buckwheat noodles and galettes made with locally produced buckwheat flour while admiring the ginkgo trees.
Visit to feel peace and healing in the peaceful scenery of Showa Village and the wooden schoolhouse surrounded by nature. You will have a pleasant time.
