Shimoburo Yuttari Shuttle Taxi Day 2 (Shimoburo Onsenkyo, Oma Town)
Have you ever heard of Shimofuro Onsenkyo, located at the northern end of Aomori Prefecture, Honshu? With the sea in front of you and mountains behind you, Shimofuro is a historic hot spring resort known since the Muromachi period (1333-1573). It is a cozy hot spring resort that can be reached on foot, but there are three different types of hot springs, so you can enjoy the different types of hot spring water.
Shimoburo Onsenkyo is located in the northern part of Aomori
Shimoburo Onsenkyo can only be reached by car. Although public transportation buses are available, why not treat yourself to a relaxing and enjoyable trip by taking the "Shimoburo Yuttari Shuttle Taxi"?

What is the Shimoburo Yuttari Shuttle Service?

This chartered cab, available from October 12, 2024 (Sat.) to February 28, 2025 (Fri.), can accommodate one to nine passengers and connects JR Shimokita Station and Shimoburo Onsenkyo, with stops at tourist facilities along the way. There are several plans available, but this time we took Plan A for the outward trip and Plan C for the return trip!

Day 2: Itinerary

On the second day, we chose Plan C, which took a little detour and stopped at Oma-zaki, famous for Oma's tuna.

7:00 Wake up

We woke up a little early to enjoy the morning bath at the hot spring resort. Before heading to the hot springs, I looked out of the room and saw snow!
Snow is piling up!
I was thrilled to see how the landscape had changed overnight, and headed to the hotel's hot springs. After warming myself in the indoor bath, I went to the semi-open-air bath, which I had been looking forward to taking in the snow! The cold air was coming in, but the hot spring water kept the temperature hot enough to warm me up! The view of the outside while soaking in the hot spring was wonderful, with snow fluttering in the air. I almost lost track of time.

8:00 Breakfast

After enjoying the snow bath, we had breakfast in the hall. The breakfast was sumptuous and delightful from the morning, including sashimi of spear squid and miso soup with funori (seaweed), which is typical of Kazamaura Village.

The "shellfish miso," a local dish of Aomori Prefecture, is fun to make by cracking the eggs and mixing them together by yourself! The shellfish broth is so strong that you can eat as much as you like with rice. It was a very satisfying breakfast.

9:00 Stroll around Shimoburo Onsen Hot Spring Village♪

After enjoying a leisurely breakfast and a good night's rest, we checked out of the hotel. There is still time before the cab picks us up, so we leave our luggage at the hotel and set off to explore Shimoburo Onsenkyo.
Walking down an alley...
We found the entrance to a shrine with beautiful snow piled up.
As we walked along the retro streets, we found a shrine! I checked it out and found that it is a historic shrine called "Wakamiya Inari Shrine" and that a festival called "Wakamiya Inari Shrine Festival" is held there in October. I was intrigued to learn that a boat-shaped float, typical of a fishing port town, will be on display!

The trees around the shrine were stained slightly white from this morning's snow, and it seemed as if I had wandered into another world. The torii gate led me up the hill to the shrine. The snow on the shrine and the trees behind it gave it a beautiful and sacred atmosphere. I opened the door to the shrine and paid my respects.

We open the door and pay our respects.
When I turned around after praying, I could see the whole town of Shimoburo and the ocean. It may be difficult to visit the shrine if there is snow on the ground since it is uphill to the shrine, but it was a very nice shrine and I highly recommend a visit if you have the chance.
We could overlook Shimoburo from the shrine.
Next, we went to "Memorial Road," an arch bridge of the Oma Railway, located about a 5-minute walk from the shrine. Originally, the railroad track was to be laid, but it was cancelled during the war, and the place is now known as Memorial Road.
It looks like a real station
Shimofuro Station, which has become a phantom
There is a footbath here, but unfortunately it is closed during the winter. Located overlooking the sea and the hot spring resort, visitors can sit on a bench and enjoy the scenery while reminiscing about the phantom railroad.

After taking a break, we wanted to go to the seaside, so we went to the sea from the stairs at the end of the arch bridge of the Oma Railway! If there is a lot of snow on the ground, the stairs may be difficult to reach, so please use another route to access the seaside in that case.

In front of you is a fishing port, lined with fishing boats. From the fishing port, the town of Shimoburo and the mountains looked very beautiful!

It is almost time for the cab to pick us up, so we return to Miuraya to pick up our luggage. On the way back to Miura-ya, we found an objet d'art in the shape of a squid! A walk around the area might lead to some fun discoveries!

10:45 Depart from Shimoburo Onsenkyo!

After picking up our luggage at the hotel, we boarded a cab that had come to pick us up at Kaikyo-no-Yu and were ready to go. After a comfortable 25-minute ride in the cab, we arrived at Oma-zaki, famous for Oma's tuna!
Oma-zaki

11:20 Enjoy Oma's tuna at Fish Eater's Oma-nzoku.

Speaking of Oma, tuna is the name of the game! You can't leave without eating tuna♪ After leaving our luggage in the cab, we made a reservation at "Ohmanzoku (fish-eating Omani (people))," a fish-eating restaurant. This restaurant is located just a short walk from Oma-zaki, where you can taste Oma's tuna. The owner is a fisherman, and he serves a large whole tuna, which he disassembles at the restaurant. It must be absolutely delicious!

A big fishing banner and autographs of celebrities are lined up.
After staring at the menu, here is what I ordered! The three-color tuna bowl!
Gorgeous three-color tuna bowl!
The three-color tuna donburi is a sumptuous dish that includes akami (red meat), chutoro (medium fatty tuna), and otoro (large fatty tuna), and is a perfect combination of the best of both worlds. The deep flavor of the lean tuna and the refined fat of the medium and fatty tuna were well balanced, and I quickly finished the bowl without getting bored. It was very tasty!
Two-color tuna bowl
Set meal of maguro (tuna)
We also ordered the "two-color tuna bowl" and the "maguro teishoku" (set meal with tuna), and we were glad that the two-color tuna bowl was a little cheaper because it did not include the large fatty tuna, making it easier on the wallet. Of course, the taste is also delicious.

The Magu Kara Teishoku is an original menu item of Oma Nanzoku San. I was afraid to try it, wondering what fried tuna would be like, but it is very tasty! The batter is crispy and the inside is fluffy. The batter is crispy and the inside is fluffy. There is no bitterness, and you can't stop eating! It was a shocking taste that overturned the notion that fish is raw, such as sashimi.

12:00 Searches for souvenir shops in Oma

After enjoying the tuna of Oma, we went to the Oma Sightseeing Souvenir Center.
Oma Tourist Souvenir Center is conveniently located right in front of Oma-zaki.
While we were gawking at the various tuna products, we got the "Original Tuna Salted Fish" sold only at this store and a "Certificate of Arrival at Oma-zaki, the northernmost point of Honshu" to commemorate our visit to Oma-zaki! The shiokara (salted fish) is said to have many repeat customers. It is salted fish, but I am glad that I can take it home at room temperature! I am looking forward to eating it at home!

12:15 Take a commemorative photo at Oma-zaki!

After purchasing souvenirs, we took a leisurely stroll around Oma-zaki. The tuna monument, which is the most famous in Oma-zaki, is a symbol of Oma-zaki! The Tuna Monument is modeled after a 440 kg tuna caught by a fisherman in Oma Town. It is so large that a person could ride on it! We immediately took a standard commemorative photo.

12:30 Depart from Oma Zaki

After we had had our fill of Omazaki, a cab came to pick us up. After getting into the warm car and taking a breather, we headed for JR Shimokita Station.

I felt a sense of regret about leaving Shimokita, and while taking pictures from inside the car, the gentle rocking and warmth of the cab made me drift off to sleep. Before I knew it, we had arrived at the station in no time.

After unloading our luggage from the car, we said goodbye to the cab!

Impressions on the use of this service

Here are some recommendations and points to note after actually using the Shimoburo Yuttari Shuttle Taxi this time.

Recommendation point 1: You can easily go sightseeing with nothing in hand.

When you stay overnight, you tend to have a lot of luggage. If you use public transportation, you will have to carry your luggage with you, but since it was a chartered cab, I was able to leave my luggage inside the cab and go sightseeing lightly. It was also a nice point to be able to sightsee easily without having to worry about preparing coins needed for the bus or missing stops.

Recommendation point 2: Safe and secure transportation

If you can drive, you can also access the area by renting a car, but driving a rental car on unfamiliar snow-covered roads can be nerve-wracking. We were especially happy to be able to relax and go back to bed without worrying about driving after relaxing at the hot springs.

Recommendation point 3: You can talk with a local driver.

You can get unexpected information by listening to the stories of locals. It depends on the driver, but if you like to interact with them, you may be able to hear some unique local information if you talk to them actively♪.

Points to note

Please note that reservations must be made at least 4 days in advance through the website. Please note that payment is by credit card only. Also, please note that although you can talk to the local driver, there is no sightseeing information or guide available.

The official website where you can book the Shimoburo Yuttari Shuttle Taxi includes detailed information about the places where you can stop by. There are many attractive places that we did not stop by this time, so please examine them carefully.
