Gero Onsen Town's famous landmark, the Chaplin Statue
What's so special about Gero Onsen?
Gero Onsen is one of the three most famous hot springs in Japan, along with Arima and Kusatsu. You have probably heard of Gero Onsen at least once, haven't you? The water is clear and colorless, with a smooth texture. The water is colorless and clear, with a smooth texture and a very high pH value of 9.2, which has a natural soapy effect, making it known as "beauty water" that makes the skin smooth and silky. The benefits include rheumatism, motor dysfunction, neuralgia, and beauty effects.
The author's skin always becomes rough after bathing, and moisturizing cream is a must, but she was surprised to find that her skin was moist and smooth for a long time after bathing in the Gero Onsen! The "simple" nature of Gero Onsen, which is a characteristic of Gero Onsen, means that the water does not easily burn the body, making it a hot spring that can be enjoyed by both men and women of all ages. Three ways to enjoy Gero Onsen Town!
Gero Onsen Town is home to as many as 55 inns and hotels, and is surrounded by a splendid hot spring resort area. In this issue, we will introduce how to enjoy the hot spring resort and recommended spots for walking around the town.
No.1 Let's enjoy with a yumeguri handbill!
If you have come to Gero Onsen, you want to enjoy the hot springs at various ryokan! For those who want to do so, we recommend the "Yumeguri Handbills. With one "Yumeguri Handbill," you can take a bath at any of the three participating inns. The three stickers on the wooden handbill are removed each time the handbill is used. The validity period is 6 months from the date of purchase, so you don't have to use them all at once.
You can also take the handprints home, so they make a perfect souvenir or memento of your trip! Where can I buy them?" What kind of hot springs can I go to? Please click the button below to check it out! Yumeguri handbill Click here for details of "Yumeguri Handbills!
No.2 Let's enjoy free footbaths!
There are not only numerous inns and hotels in Gero Onsen Town, but also seven footbaths. Some are free of charge, some are traditional footbaths, some have a variety of footbaths, such as the "Sarubobo Golden Footbath" where you will be welcomed by the most famous local character in the Hida region, "Sarubobo," and the "Venus Footbath" which is designed in a modern style, making you want to try them all.
We recommend that you bring your own towel when enjoying footbaths. If you go empty-handed, you can purchase one at a souvenir shop in the hot spring resort area.Traditional footbath "Sagi no Ashiyu" (Heron's Footbath) Sarubobo Kogane AshiyuClick here for more information about "Ashiyu" (footbath)!
No.3 Let's enjoy eating sweets!
After walking around the onsen town a lot, visiting the footbaths, and soaking in the onsen... don't you get hungry? In fact, there are many sweets shops throughout Gero Onsen Town where you can enjoy eating and walking around! Moreover, all the stores have very cute exteriors, and the sweets make you want to take pictures of them.
The one that attracted me the most was "Yumiya. The "hot egg soft serve," which is a fusion of hot spring eggs made in Gero Onsen and cold soft serve ice cream, is available while soaking in the store's footbath! The soft serve ice cream on top is thick and creamy rather than refreshing, and when mixed with the onsen egg, it makes for a more satisfying dish. It is a great way to soak in a footbath while eating something cold and delicious.
Yumiya also offers other unusual and warm sweets, such as pudding heated in hot spring water. There are many other recommended sweets in Gero Onsen Town, including Yumiya, so if you are interested, please check out the links below. Footbath at YumiyaYumiya's official website
Extra Points to Enjoy Walking Around Town Even More!
So far, we have introduced the playful Gero Onsen Machi, but there are many more attractions! Walking around Gero Onsen Machi, you will actually find manholes and artwork with egret and frog patterns all over the town, in reference to the legend of the egret and the frog call "gerogero" (frog). It is fun to walk around the town looking for where the egrets and frogs are hiding. Frog mosaic artCheck out the Gero Onsen Town MAP here!
