The most enjoyable part of traveling is the local cuisine, the spectacular scenery that changes with the seasons, and of course, the hot springs! Did you know that there are many hot springs in eastern Japan that are called "ji-onsen," or "local hot springs," and have been loved by local people for a long time? Once used as therapeutic hot spring baths, and even today, there are many hot spring resorts that offer healing and comfort to visitors. In this interview, we introduce the charms of "local hot springs" that warm the body and soul!

What is a "Yumamori"?

The word "yumori" means "guardian of hot spring water. In other words, a "yumori" is a caretaker of a hot spring. They are in charge of controlling the amount and temperature of the hot water. The traditional hot spring baths that have taken root in each area and are the pride of the yumori of the "local hot springs" introduced in this project have been protected by them throughout their long history.

In this 29th installment of our series, "The Charms of Local Onsen", we introduce Nochi Onsen Hotel in Fukushima Prefecture. We interviewed Mr. Ogura, the Yumori-no-Onsen (guardian of hot springs).

History and Benefits of "Nochi Onsen" in Fukushima Prefecture, Tohoku

Tell us about the history of Nochi Onsen Hotel, a hot spring hotel located 1,200 meters above sea level, where you can enjoy hot spring baths above the clouds.

The hot spring opened in the early Meiji era. At that time, it was called Kato Ya Ryokan. It later became Nochi Onsen Ryokan, and in 1974 (Showa 49), it became the current Nochi Onsen Hotel.

The Nochi Onsen Hotel has a very long history, dating back to the Meiji Era.
I heard that the hot water at the Nochi Onsen Hotel is effective for skin diseases.

Some guests come for treatment of skin diseases. In addition, we often have customers who come because it improves their legs and backs.

Nochi Onsen Hotel's six hot spring baths

Nochi Onsen Hotel has six hot springs, including "Onimen no Yu," "Tengu no Yu," and "Senju no Yu." Can you tell us about the characteristics of each hot spring?

The best feature of the baths is that the water in all the baths is natural hot spring water that is free-flowing from the source. In the open-air bath "Onimen-no-yu," you can enjoy snow viewing in winter, fresh greenery and mountain cherry blossoms in spring, and autumn leaves in fall. You can enjoy the changing scenery of the four seasons. The mountain is also illuminated at night.

So each season has its own way to enjoy. It is very tasteful to enjoy the scenery in each season.

Yu Mamoru Ogura-san
"Tengu no Yu" is a bath where the indoor and outdoor baths are connected by a tub, so you can enjoy both without having to change clothes. The "Senju no Yu" is a traditional Nochi Onsen Hotel bath with three separate cypress bathtubs, each with different temperatures.

In addition to the three hot springs you mentioned, there is also a "men's large bath," "women's large bath," "women's large bath," "women's open-air bath," "women's outdoor bath," and a sauna. All of the hot springs are very attractive and I would like to enjoy the hot water of Nochi Onsen Hotel during the coming cold season.

How to spend your time at Nochi Onsen Hotel

Please tell us about the three types of rooms you have available at the Nochi Onsen Hotel, and if there is a room you particularly recommend among them, please tell us about it along with your recommendations and how you recommend spending the time.

The rooms we recommend are usually rooms with a view of Fukushima city. At night, you can also see the night view of Fukushima City.

Nochi Onsen Hotel offers a panoramic view of Fukushima City, which is unique to Nochi Onsen Hotel. We are also very happy to be able to see the night view. Do you have any other recommendations or ways to spend your time?

During the fall foliage season, you can see the colored trees up close from the windows of the mountain-side rooms. The red and yellow colors of the trees are very beautiful and highly recommended. The best way to spend your time is to relax and enjoy your stay.

Please let us know if there is anything special about the food served at the inn.

For dinner, we try to create a menu with a sense of the season, incorporating "local ingredients. We also serve not only original sake but also "local sake" from Fukushima. How about a refreshing junmai ginjo to go with nabe in the coming season?

I would love to enjoy dishes that make the most of seasonal ingredients and the sake that goes well with them.

How to enjoy the unique winter season

Is there anything that you enjoy only in winter?

From now on, what can I say but "Yukimi-buro" (snow viewing bath)！ The snowy onsen at Onimen is especially nice on a sunny day. It is cold until you get in, but afterwards you will feel warm and refreshed.
In addition, the mountain cherry blossoms above the bathtub in the Onimen-no-yu are very beautiful in spring at the end of the season of fresh greenery.

The open-air baths on a cold day are sure to heal both body and soul.
