Have you ever thought, "I'd like to live in multiple locations? While the flexible working style using full remote and teleworking has been spreading after the Corona Disaster, Hanamaki City in Iwate Prefecture has been conducting a trial tour of multi-location living in a total of four times to attract "multi-location dwellers" to Hanamaki City, who are not limited to one place of residence, but have various locations across the country, and is sending information about the tour to the public. The first tour will be held in October 2024, and the second tour will be held in October 2011.

The first tour was held from October 20 (Sun.) to 22 (Tue.), 2024, for three days and two nights. Here, the editorial staff of *and trip. who was involved in the planning of the tour reports on the tour and the participants' comments!

What is Multi-location Residency?

For this tour, we defined "multi-location living" in this way.

"The use of houses, apartments, accommodations, etc. ("other locations") in addition to the main living base, while working and living in various ways, including teleworking and hybrid work, at the main location and at other locations."

After the Corona Disaster, you now have an environment where you can work anywhere with a computer without having to come to work. For such teleworkers, we would like to encourage them to choose Hanamaki City as a future destination for multi-location living or beyond. To this end, we first conducted a tour to familiarize them with the culture and people of Hanamaki City. Then, we will share information about what the participants experienced in Hanamaki City, and hope that people who read the information will want to visit Hanamaki City! and then visit Hanamaki City.

First tour itinerary

This tour focused on the "Towa area" of Hanamaki City, with the following itinerary. The tour was designed to allow participants to experience the culture and people of Hanamaki City while teleworking.

Scene of the day (1) Orientation

After arriving at Towa Onsen, the venue of the tour, the participants introduced themselves. They talked about how they came to live in multiple locations, both in Japan and abroad, and what they find attractive about choosing Hanamaki as a base of operations.

A participant who has visited Hanamaki City many times said, "The beauty of Hanamaki City is that it is in the countryside. It is good to be new and fashionable, but the countryside should be left as it is. Hanamaki City has that." Hanamaki City has that. The people of Hanamaki City were also happy and aware of this. They seemed to be pleased and aware of what they had learned.

Washi Yume Lantern Exhibition 2024 Autumn Campaign in Narushima

After the orientation, the group stopped by Narushima Mikumano Shrine and Bishamondo, where an event was held from Friday, October 18 to Sunday, October 20.

Narushima Washi paper is a valuable cultural artifact registered as an intangible cultural asset of Hanamaki City. It has a history of more than 350 years in the Narushima district of Towa Town and is known as "the northernmost washi. The paper is made from the bark of paper mulberry trees and the mucilage extracted from the bark of noriutsugi trees.
Visitors were given explanations about Narushima washi and saki-weaving by members of the Regional Development Cooperation Volunteers, and were able to actually hold the washi in their hands and try their hand at weaving, an experience that can only be had here.

At the Narushima Washi Yume Lantern Exhibition, approximately 400 lampshades made by local residents using the precious Narushima washi paper were displayed at the venue. It was a space where visitors could enjoy the colorful works of art that were gently lit.

Tour of Tsuchizawa Shopping Street with local residents

On the second day, the first stop was the Tsuchisawa shopping street, a 3-minute walk from Tsuchisawa Station on the JR Kamaishi Line. The Tsuchisawa Shopping Street holds the annual "Tsuchisawa Art and Craft Fair," featuring many works of art, including sundries and accessories.

On this day, we were guided around the Tsuchisawa shopping street by a member of the "Towa Operation Council," which promotes immigration and supports regional development in Towa Town. Starting from the Towa General Branch Office, we headed to Towa Junior High School, stopping at Sato Confectionery, a local favorite, Sasacho Brewery, a miso and soy sauce brewer, and Matsuba Shoten, where soy sauce octopus balls are very popular. The "00" here is excellent! This is the best place to buy "00"! We enjoyed walking around town for about an hour and a half, receiving information only locals can offer.

Scene of the day (4) Towa Junior High School in Hanamaki City promoting "Towa Creative Studies

The last stop on the second day was a visit to Hanamaki City Towa Junior High School, where the principal spoke about "Towa Creative Studies. Towa Junior High School is developing learning in collaboration with the local community under the school-wide theme of "Towa Creative Studies" during the integrated study period. In class, students spend time thinking about their hometown, Towa. In addition, each grade level has its own theme, which helps students deepen their connection with the community step by step.

Theme for each school year

First grade: "Living in the community: Discovering the pride and charm of the hometown! ~
2nd Grade: "Living in Society: Through contact with predecessors and work experience learning! ~
3rd Grade: "Living in the Future: What we can do for the community: Contribute to the community and communicate! ~"
At a local marathon event called the "Towa Tanada Nobiri-Run," a 21.6-kilometer run held in September, third graders volunteered to inspect the course and help with the day's operations, making an effort to connect with local residents through their studies.
Having a system where the school and community collaborate and learn about the community is an extremely valuable experience for the students. In addition, the fact that school teachers and community members are working together to nurture the children is a joy not only for the students, but also for their parents and families.

Comments from Participants

Through these experiences and contact with local people, we received the following comments from participants.

We believe that experience is the gateway to finding a base.
For me, the important part of the experience is to dive deeply through the entrance and meet the "people" within the experience.
Through the experience, I was able to meet many people.
What I saw from these encounters was that there was a comfortable atmosphere of
"try what you want to do without any self-consciousness and without hesitation".
~The town of Towa in Hanamaki City was filled with such an atmosphere.
~A good sense of openness toward people from the outside ~
~A subtle but comforting "meddling" that is more comfortable for middle-aged people who are feeling a little lonely ~
The town of Towa in Hanamaki City was filled with such an atmosphere.
After this tour,
I have a stronger feeling that I will soon be able to create a "new hometown of my own choosing".

Beautiful and photogenic scenery and special experiences are important elements for a short trip.
However, I believe that the key to immigration and the creation of a multi-local community is more important than these elements.

If you have the opportunity, I encourage you to try an experience not for the sake of experience, but for the sake of meeting and interacting with people.
