Beautiful and colorful "ICHO" (ginkgo)
The Ibaraki Prefectural Museum of History in Mito City is a history museum where visitors can study the history of Ibaraki. Within its large grounds, which are also part of Kairakuen Garden, the former main building of the Mizukaido Elementary School and the former Mogi family residence, both of which are designated cultural properties by Ibaraki Prefecture, have been relocated to the museum. In the fall, the ginkgo trees give the area a beautiful autumn look.

Ginkgo Festival

The 2024 History Museum Ginkgo Festival will be held from Saturday, November 2 to Monday, November 24, coinciding with the best time to view the ginkgo trees and with Ibaraki Prefecture Citizens' Day on Wednesday, November 13. The Ibaraki Prefectural Museum of History is one of the most famous spots in Mito to view the autumn foliage. The 100-meter-long avenue of ginkgo trees usually begins to change color in mid-November and is usually at its best by late November. At the peak of the season, you can see a spectacular golden carpet of fallen ginkgo leaves.

Photo Spot of Light

A lighted photo spot is available only during the Ginkgo Festival at the History Museum. Enjoy an autumn evening at the "Path of Light Light-up" where candles light up the road lined with ginkgo trees, or at the "Japanese umbrella light-up" where you can take pictures wearing Japanese traditional clothing. In addition to the lighting up, various events such as "Kimono Show," "History Museum Talk Session," and "Rickshaw Ride" are scheduled to be held. Please check the flyer and website for details before participating.

The Ibaraki Prefectural Museum of History is also known as a good spot for viewing the rows of ginkgo trees.
In autumn, the 100-meter-long rows of ginkgo trees turn golden.
There are about 60 ginkgo trees. During the History Hall Ginkgo Festival, the trees are lit up after sunset, so visitors can enjoy different atmospheres during the day and at night.
