What is Meiji Jingu Gaien?
Tree-lined avenue in Meiji Jingu Gaien
Ginkgo trees are planted along the tree-lined avenue for 300 meters from the Aoyama-dori entrance to the circumference road of the central plaza of the outer garden. These ginkgo trees were carefully selected from 1600 seedlings grown inside the present Meiji Jingu Shrine, which have grown to about 6 meters in height. In order to maintain its beauty, the ginkgo is shaped once every four years during the leafless season, so that visitors can see a beautiful shape that is rarely seen elsewhere!

In the season of autumn leaves...
The ginkgo trees are planted lower as you approach the Seitoku Memorial Picture Gallery, and the ground is 1 meter lower on the Picture Gallery side than on the Aoyama-dori entrance. Therefore, when looking at the Picture Gallery from the Aoyama-dori entrance, you can feel a three-dimensional effect and experience a different kind of beauty than when walking along the tree-lined avenue.
Although the Shibuya area has an urban image, there are many places rich in nature within the area!
Why not visit Shibuya in the fall to find your favorite spot for autumn foliage?
