This time, we would like to introduce Kosetsuen, located in Miharu Park, a large comprehensive park on a hill about 10 minutes by car from Hakodate Yunokawa Onsen.
Kosetsuen" sounds very elegant, doesn't it? It is said that the name was given by the head priest of Chion-in Temple in Kyoto, who visited the area during the Taisho period (1912-1926), meaning "a plum-scented garden in the snow.

Kosetsuen, Hokkaido's only nationally designated cultural garden

This park is a "landscape garden" created by Minejiro Iwafune, a wealthy merchant in Hakodate during the Meiji period (1868-1912), and was originally used as a villa for the Iwafune family.
Later, in 1927, the park was opened to Hakodate citizens free of charge through the courtesy of the Iwafune family. Today, the land is owned by Hakodate City, which purchased it from the Iwafune family, and is a popular place for citizens to relax.

Lights up during the Hakodate MOMI-G Festa!

Kosetsuen is a year-round recreational spot for Hakodate citizens, and is especially popular for its autumn foliage.
The "Hakodate MOMI-G (Momiji) Festa" is held during the season of autumn leaves. 2025 will be held from October 17 (Friday) to November 3 (Monday). During the festival, the 100-meter-long maple tree-lined avenue will be illuminated every day at night, creating a fantastic sight.
Hakodate is located in the southern part of Hokkaido, but in October and November, morning and evening temperatures drop below 10℃. It is especially cold during the illumination period, so please dress warmly.
Hakodate Yunokawa Hot Spring is a 10-minute drive from Kosetsuen. Hakodate Yunokawa Onsen is home to many hot spring resorts, both large and small. Why not enjoy the autumn leaves and hot springs in Hakodate on a long autumn evening?
