Introduction to the Tokaido Kawasaki-juku Exchange Center

Have you ever heard of the Tokaido Highway? Tokaido is one of the five highways established by the Tokugawa shogunate during the Edo period (1603-1868). There were fifty-three stations on the Tokaido Highway connecting Edo and Kyoto. The Tokaido started from Nihonbashi, and Kawasaki flourished as the second post town.

Located along the old Tokaido Highway, about a 10-minute walk from JR Kawasaki Station, the Tokaido Kawasaki Yado Exchange Center was opened on October 1, 2031 as a facility to learn about the history and culture of the Tokaido Kawasaki Yado, to pass it on to future generations, and to serve as a base for local activities and exchanges. It opened on October 1, 2031. It is well known by both local residents and visitors from far and wide.

The first floor where you can enjoy the stories of the past and present of Kawasaki Inn while taking a rest

Upon entering the building, visitors will find a rest area modeled after the teahouse "Mannenya" of Kawasaki Inn. On a monitor near the entrance, visitors can watch a video about the history of Kawasaki Inn and the development of Kawasaki since the Meiji Era. The monitor explains the 53 Stages of the Tokaido and Kawasaki Inn in an easy-to-understand manner, allowing visitors to feel close to the Kawasaki of 400 years ago. There is also a space for resting and socializing, and a corner for selling goods, where you can stop by casually during your walk through the city.

Go back in time to the Edo Period The 2nd floor

On the second floor, there are exhibits related to Kawasaki Inn and the 53 Stages of the Tokaido Highway, with picture maps of Tokaido's Kawasaki Inn spread out on the floor. In addition, "Monogatari Box," which introduces various stories that took place at Kawasaki Inn through images, a model of Kawasaki Inn, and old travel tools are on display. Visitors can take pictures at the "Rokugo no Ferry" photo spot and feel as if they have stepped into the world of ukiyoe woodblock prints.

The 3rd floor introduces the transformation of Kawasaki from the Edo period to the present day.

Visitors can see, touch, and feel the Edo period's Kawasaki-juku. There is also a "Kawasaki Deconstructed Theater" that introduces the past and present of Kawasaki from various angles, and a corner that introduces people associated with Tokaido's Kawasaki-juku. Kawasaki Inn is an important historical resource that serves as the starting point of today's Kawasaki. However, due to numerous fires, earthquakes, and war damage, many related materials have been lost, and few vestiges remain of the inn as it was in the Edo period. The Tokaido Kawasaki Inn Exchange Center is a facility that will help visitors to discover Kawasaki Inn and its history through various methods. Please stop by when you visit Kawasaki.
